Next year I intend to start big game hunting again, after a 25 year lay off. I hunted up until I was about 23 or so then family, and work kept me out of the field. I need some instruction/guidance about where to hunt and thought that starting with a guide would give me the schooling that would help me with a successful hunt.

I have seen the ads in Field and Stream and Sports Afield for the $5000 hunts and don't really want to bite off that much financially. . . plus some say that they are guaranteed - no game, no pay; which makes me think that they are going to put domesticated game animals in front of me.

Any suggestions on where to look for a reliable guide or outfitter? What can I do to evaluate their claims of fitness for purpose? Thoughts on how to compare prices?

I have the winter to make my choice, since I can't hunt again until next fall. Had a license in Wyoming for Antelope, but had heart surgery in September so I am planning for next year. . . Oh well. . .

Well between now and then I suggest getting your butt up here to Rock River as often as possible and we can go out scout, shoot, etc getting you ready for next years season. By the come of the season next year, you should know enough about the hunt, the animals, and the territory that you shouldn't need pay for a guide. You are more than welcome to my house anytime, and between my father, myself, and my buds I can all but guarantee a successful hunt for deer and antelope, and pretty darn good odds on an Elk as well.

I would take up Noids offer. Thats the way I normally hunt. BIL and a handful of locals there for backup/safety. Good people. Don't forget to "show" your appreciation for them bringing you into their circle! Gadgets, knives, cash, whiskey, etc......
