8 mm Rifles

Other than collecting milsurp mausers, No, I don't see the point. If you're gonna jump past a .308 cal round, may as well jump up all the way to .338 (at least), instead of .323, with the good bullet selection available in .338.

I have and I will again. I have a K98 that I shot surplus until my shoulder fell off, then made a custom out of it and chambered for .308. Nice gun. I am wanting another 8mm mabye a cheap 24/47 or something under $220, as I still have around 300 rounds of 1944 turkish in a ammo can. I would also like to make it a beater truck-deer rifle for close range open sight stalking rifle.

I own and shoot 3 8MM rifles. 1 in full military form, 1 in moderately sporterized form, and 1 completely customized and chambered in 8MM-06.

Yup, a nice pre-war Mauser sporter in 8x57, kicked like a mule with that hogback stock.

There is nothing wrong with the 8x57, just not many current rifles chambered for it, and a lack of good bullet selection for reloading.

Kicks like a mule!! The Turkish stuff I got ahold of was kicking right on my threshold of ouch that hurts, It will feel better tomorrow??

Handloading the Sierra 175 gr. makes a very effective game round for most everything in the lower 48.

Remington 700 BDL 8mm Mag.

I already have an '88 Comission carbine and a Gewehr '98 in 8x57 JS.

I have 2 8x57 JS rifles, an M48B Yugo and a 1941 Kirikale Turkish Mauser.

I just bought an "unissued" M-48 Yugo, and looking into some 196gr Hornady hunting ammo. Going to buy some Remington 170gr "power point" soft points for this weekend if I get all of the "monkey crap" cleaned out and off of the rifle.

I inherited this 8mm factory Mauser sporter from my Uncle who brought it home from Germany in 1945 and used it in upstate NY every year until he got a Model 1953 Mannlicher Schoenauer 30-06 in the very early 60s. I have hunted the 8mm on the East Coast as a teenager and later in my 20s in Ca. It is a stone killer with Norma 200 grain softpoints which the rifle was sighted for since my uncle put the peep sight on in 1956 or so.Now my eyes are a little too dim and the distances too long. IMHO the 8mm with heavy good soft points is as good a killer as any 30-06.

aside from mil-surp, other 8mm's i'm interested in: i would love a rem 700 in 8 rem mag.

Saweeet!Normally I kinda gag at the very sight of a ''Sporter'' [I love and collect milsurp] but that is a very tastefully done rifle,made in the tradition of the Pleasure Mauser.The 30-06 was ,arguably, based on the 8mm,and the Springfield was patterned directly on the Mauser.

Sure. I bought an M98 several years ago - when there was still plenty of cheap milsurp for it. It's in very good condition, so I haven't chopped it up, since the rifles are getting a bit more scarce, too.

It loves the Heavy Ball - 196 grains - and shoots very accurately with it. Ouch So it's a fun one to take to the range for seeing how well I can do at my age with irons.

That being said, if I were to buy a bolt action for hunting, the 30-06 is still the top choice for a lot of us just because the ammo is available in such a broad variety. You won't find a lot of 8mm ammo at Cabela's.

The 8mm can do just about anything the .30 cals can do - except you won't find a lot of lightweight 'varmint' ammo for it. But if you like the old military rifles, the M98 is one of the 'top tier' classics.

The 8MM Mauser cartridge, when used in a M98 firearm in good condition or a modern rifle, can equal or exceed the factory 30-06 ballistics listed. The Realguns site has a good list of cartridges and loadings and here's a link to the 8MM loads.

I have a converted Turk Mauser that I built utilizing a Swede SR 8mm barrel that's pristine. It's parkerized and Duracoated in stainless coating and has a budget Corelite stock and Bold trigger.

I have a M24/47 that cleaned up nicely. Stock is a nice dark walnut and I bought a walnut handguard to match. I have a a couple of thousand rounds of Yugo that I thought I needed before I actually shot it. Now I realize I really don't need much ammo for it as it is tough to shoot more than 20 or so rounds at a time.

get one, you will not be disapointed. Spring for a early war K98 if you want a nice one. dont get one made in 1945 as the steel and quality control hit the krapper as our boyz were closing in for the kill. If you can find one get a vz24 these are top grade rifles built with pride.

YES! I am a big fan of the 8x57mm. I have an all original M98 1937 Erma (Russian capture). A Gew98 dated 1899 sporter that I have taken several whitetail deer with. Factory soft point ammo is available in 139,170 and 196gr. bullets.

Mausers are excellent rifles. There are plenty of good bullets available to handloaders. The cheap milsurp is pretty much gone though. Luckily I bought a few cases a while back.

if I didn't already have a Savage wearing a 35whelen bbl I would have already ordered an 8x57 bbl for it by now
