I'm planning on getting the Leatherman Charge TTi for general purposes. I've chosen Leatherman because a friend of mine has an older model and uses it as a hammer when he doesn't have one on hand, ha! It's still in pretty decent condition given he's a rancher and has had it almost two years.

I'm going to want a fixed blade, for protection more than anything else.

I'm aiming for a larger knife, I want something more than 3 inches but I don't want a 7 inch knife. :]

I'm aiming for durability and sleekness. I've never liked those knives with fat/wide blades.

Also I've seen people with..I guess you could call them shoulder holsters for knives, are those readily available?

I've seen Buck mentioned in a few knife threads, and in another thread I saw these..

Those are beautiful, and certainly the kind of style I'm looking for.

Since these are going to be more practical knives, and not something to put on display I'm not looking for anything terribly expensive, since I'm already paying $160+ for my Leatherman.

Thank you all in advance!

I think $150 is my max limit. And that's only if the knife is to die for.

Under $100, and very much under $100 are more than welcome. :]

I'm liking the Glock M78, from what I've found out about it so far. But certainly still open to suggestion. Edit: Besides that the M78 isn't stainless. I find that rather irksome.

I have one of the glocks and would not reccomend it if you are thinking of using it for defensive purposes. Doesn't hold an edge well and can hang in the sheath. I would recommend Columbia River Knife and Tool (crkt).

Thanks MC, but the crkt knives are exactly what I'm not looking for. I have no interest in those fat gaudy blades that aren't over 3 or 4 inches.

I'm looking for longer, slender blades that are sturdy and reliable. Preferably stainless. :]

I've come across the Fallkniven S1.

It looks to be exactly what I'm looking for, does anyone have any experience with this knife?

I can't tell how much it is from their website site, and other websites list it under different prices and I would like to make sure I get an authentic blade and not be paying more $$$ for a knock-off.

@ MC

you must have gotten one of them chinese glockknifes....

The sheath work perfect - like built into my body....
...and if you sharpen it - or like me have it sharpened
it usually holds an edge long enough to cut about 50 throats....

...since the gangs i usually butcher are usually not counting
more than 50 heads... it´s okay for a fighting knife
(and the best price...)

To the OP: ....if u r a stainless guy... you are a stainless guy...
i´m not.

Cheers all..

Have you ever tried out different styles of knives, or are you going on looks alone?

a 3-4" blade can be much faster and more effective than a 6-9" blade because it conceals easier/better, draws MUCH faster (especially if you're cornered...try getting a 12" overall length blade out when you can only move your elbow 3"), it lets you move your hand faster, and frankly can do everything a larger blade can aside from fighting too.

I recommend going somewhere where they sell the types of knives you're looking for as well as smaller ones and trying them all out for feel. If you're truly looking for a defensive knife you probably should get one that feels light in the hand...and read up on what a knife fight would be like (not pleasant) - the best strategy is cut and run, and rarely are you going to be using a knife against another knife.

Good luck!

A relatively inexpensive fixed blade knife that may meet your needs are the "mini-kabars" that feature 5 inch blades. Kabar and Ontario both market these types of knives. Obviously, fixed bladed knives come in a wide variety of blade lengths, but a 5 incher can serve for both self-defense and utility tasks also. My best advice is for you to visit a cutlery store that carries a large selection of knives and examine those that appeal to you. Good luck.

For those who are curious, I carry a 5 inch fixed blade knife on numerous occasions and like it. I hope this helps.

Conwict - I'm not getting a knife to go run around drawing my knife as fast as possible.

I commute on a bicycle, and a large knife will be more of a deterrent than some tiny little 4 inch knife that is all trendy and "extreme" looking. I have no plans to be fighting with a knife if I can avoid it.

I have/had plenty of folders but never bothered to look into fixed blades.

My uncle has a ka-bar and it was pretty huge, I've never heard of a mini ka-bar though. I'll have to look into it. :]

The Buck would be a great knife.Buy it ,try it:)

However, a large 5" inch blade can become a pain for EDC. The largest fixed I carry has a 3 7/8" blade. I can carry open or concealed in total comfort on my belt all day long.

This is what was on my belt today, 3 1/2" Sharpfinger. Not strictly for defense, but would do in a pinch.

Also your idea of the meer site of a knife as a deterrant is troublesome. Granted a bad guy might move on to someone else. But what if he don't?

Here in Seattle the only real trouble are punk kids who think they're hard because they grew up in "bad neighborhoods". Even though they're wearing $150 shoes.

I have grown up in bad neighborhoods, from here to NY and a few places in between, that and I have reasonable training in some Karate and Muay Thai.

If someone means to come at me and isn't deterred by a large knife, then I would do my best to run.

Assuming he doesn't have a gun and I am unable to run at girst, I would stab him in the thigh, twist the knife, pull it out and then run.

If he has a gun, well, I'd pray he can't aim!

Most people though, will be deterred by a large knife.

P.S. EDC?

I thought Seattle had a limit of 3 1/2 inch for carry ? Might want to verify your Seattle specific laws before purchasing a fixed blade for carry.

It is unlawful for a person knowingly to:
B. Carry concealed or unconcealed on his or her person any dangerous knife, or carry concealed on his or her person any deadly weapon other than a firearm;

SMC 12A.14.010 Definitions.

The following definitions apply in this chapter:

A. "Dangerous knife" means any fixed-blade knife and any other knife having a blade more than three and one-half inches (3 1/2") in length.

B. "Fixed-blade knife" means any knife, regardless of blade length, with a blade which is permanently open and does not fold, retract or slide into the handle of the knife, and includes any dagger, sword, bayonet, bolo knife, hatchet, axe, straight-edged razor, or razor blade not in a package, dispenser or shaving appliance.

I know JTW.

It's also unlawful for me to ride my bicycle at night without a headlight. :]

I've never had any instance where I was near a police officer, apart from a time where a friend fell off his roof. And I certainly don't do anything to give any officer the right to search my person.

audioautomatica-

i mean no offence by this, but you need to seriously evaluate your attitude of self defence.

that said, my personal pick for what i call "an all purpose knife" is a Benchmade Nimravus. a blade long enough to handle most tasks yet shot enough to be easily drawn and resheathed. thick enough for light utilitarian tasks, but thin enough to be nimble and fast handling. it'd probably suit you well.

the sheat it comes with blows, but that's pretty much all knives (imo). this doesn't matter if you know how to make kydex sheathes or know somebody who does.

check it out, you'll probably like it. just don't get attached to the black finish, it wears off.

ps. If you are paying $160+ for the Leatherman you need to shop around , they can be found for under $100.

Gives ya more $$ for the knife.

I know you said
" I've never had any instance where I was near a police officer, apart from a time where a friend fell off his roof. "
, however that doesn't mean one didnt see you . ;)

Here in Vegas we have a 3" blade limit for concealed , I stick with that , my knife is to cut stuff , I have a 1911 for personal protection ( carried concealed with a permit ).

Assuming he doesn't have a gun and I am unable to run at girst, I would stab him in the thigh, twist the knife, pull it out and then run.

If he has a gun, well, I'd pray he can't aim!

Most people though, will be deterred by a large knife.

decent plan in theory , you know what they say about theory.

Consider this ,you draw it as a deterrent , they call the cops , now it is your word against theirs , and considering you are carrying something you shouldnt have been in the first place you are now in deep doo-doo. Now the same blade , 3 1/2" long , you have a leg to stand on so to speak.

If I have to pull it out, then I'm feeling threatened therefore I have the right to pull it out. :]

I'm not old enough to carry a gun, couple more years though.

I suppose getting a shorter knife wouldn't hurt, and the Benchmade 145 Nimravus looks pretty decent.

If I have to pull it out, then I'm feeling threatened therefore I have the right to pull it out

The difference between you feeling you have the right , and what the law says it two different things.

If you have a knife over 3 1/2" and you pull it out , you can expect to be charged whether you use it or not. First it is illegal for you to be carrying in the first place , 2nd you could get nailed for brandishing on top of carrying a " Dangerous Knife ".

I do not agree with the stupid laws , truth be told , the majority of them make no sense what so ever.

Just trying to save you a bit of headache , to keep you out of trouble so you don't have a black mark that would prohibit you from obtaining that concealed permit in a couple years.

You have plenty of options in a 3 1/2blade.

Whatever you choose , be safe out there.

JTW Jr. is correct. You're almost certain to have to deal with the police after being forced to use the knife than before. In a "he said" situation you'd like to keep the attention focused on why you had to use the knife instead of why you have a knife that isn't within the specifications of the law.

Frankly, you're much better off carrying some form of explainable stick than a knife anyway.

Let me add two points to my original posting. First, the term "mini-kabar" is one that I have coined to describe kabars with 5 inch blades. I hope this explanation clears up the confusion. Second, please consult your local laws on legal blade lengths. Laws governing knife types and blade lengths vary considerably within the U.S. My emphasis on a 5 inch fixed blade is a compromise between concealability and utility, not necessarily on the legality of such a knife. Always consult your local laws before deciding on what to purchase. Now, if your local jurisdiction has no regulations against it, a larger knife is preferable in my book. But always know your laws. I hope this helps.
