Does anyone have a H&R rifle and whats the pros and cons of them, how accurate are they? Ive been thinking about getting a plinker/varmit rifle in either a 223 or a 243 leaning more towards the 223 but Im looking for some input first.

I have several, so obviously I like them. They are not good looking rifles by any means but everyone I have shoots very well and is easy to handle.

I have a handi-rifle in the safe in .270win and it is a beautiful rifle.
They are indeed handy and you can carry one all day.

Also H&R will fit other caliber barrels so you can one rifle in many calibers.

Oh and for the price you can't really beat it.

I have one that's got a .30-30 barrel and 20 gauge smooth and rifled barrels. It's fun. It's accurate enough, light. It kicks a bit, and obviously one-shot has it's limitations, but as MArkinm.... said, for the price it's great. And for under a hundred bucks, you can add essentially any other centerfire caliber you want.

I have two, one in 45-70 and one in 38-55. Both are marvelously accurate and neither have had any problems. For sub $300 rifles, they're fantastic.

I have the Buffalo Classic just like the one PTK has shown.

They really are great rifles, simple, sturdy, good looking, and priced well.

If I was in the market for another single shot rifle, they would be right at the top of my list!

i have a 223 bull barrel handi rifle, they are not a particularly pretty gun, but it is a good shooter (considering the trigger) but it weighs a ton. i would sugest unless you want to bench shoot only that you get the standard barrel. my only real complaint is the rediculous trigger pull. i just took mine to a gunsmith to have that fixed ( for $35.00). the stock pull on mine was 7 lbs 10 oz.!

i have one in 300 mag with 18inch barrel i carry in a tactical briefcase reinforced with ceramic plates.....lol

I wondered about accuracy on these. Thought it would be a great varmit popper in the 223. Also thought of it in a 22 250.

I manage about 2 sq miles of land for the family in the Sierra Nevada and we have a pretty severe predator problem.
After being pulled over by the CHP for the third time in a year,
For and I quote "The type of rifle in my gun rack." Totally legal by the way.I bought a NEF Handi rifle in .223 with a bull barrel. Mounted an old Weaver fixed 7 power that I had laying around. I love the gun. Not fun to carry any distance but most of my shooting is from a blind 45-50 feet up a pine tree. The shots are a measured 210 yards overlooking one of our corral/feed areas.
I have yet to miss a dog at this sight in apx 2 years of work.
If you do your job the gun will follow.
I did work on a couple of things but name me a sub $300 gun that doesnt need work coming out of the box.
I also feel that this a great kids gun.
I didnt have a repeating gun until I was about 15 and belive I am a much better marksman as a result.

My old Survivor in .223 would do 3/4 inch on factory fodder and 1/2 on my loads. It was a solid gun that I could count on to hit. To this day it has killed at the farthest range I have seen personally by a .223. A g-hog at 650yds. Luck for sure, but the rifle had allot to do with it. Price? $225 and it still wears the $50 scope as my friend (who made the shot before he bought the gun from me) shoots it at strays.
I have another H&R too. Their Ultra Slugger Thumbhole 20ga dropped four deer this year for me with extreme accuracy (1.06"@100yds). I swapped on my father-in-law's 45cal muzzle loader barrel and got the same accuracy out of it too! I'm ordering a 50cal barrel this year for it.
My daughters will each have one once taxes come in. I wont a combo for them to enjoy and be able to upgrade as they grow.

I had one in 30-06, they are good little rifles. They truly are handy. Not a single problem with it.

I have use one in .223 bull barrel and .308. Both guns can out shoot me (all though that may not be a hard task). I really liked them, simple and effective.

Let me get this straight , you can swap out barrels if you feel the need too? That would make it cheaper than a TC with the same accuracy.

BUT unlike the TC you must have new barrels fitted to your particular frame by the manufacturer. You cannot buy drop in barrels.

Remington (new owners) have had mine for over a month now getting a ML and a 30-30 barrel fitted.

Accuracy can vary greatly with handi rifles your .223's and 30-30 are generally considered to be the best shooters expect somewhere between 1 to 2 moa realistically on averages for 5 shot 100yd groups. Stay away from the 243 many owners have experienced horrible accuracy, mine was no exception and would shoot 6" groups on a good day

But yeah the accuracy is the same or better and I've owned both

I have a couple H&R shotguns. Is it possible for me to buy a barrel for one of them in a rifle caliber of my choice?
Nevermind krochus answered this as I was typing

frames must be above a certain serial # range to qualify for the bbl accessory program

Shotguns can only be fitted with shotgun and ML barrels

rifles can be fitted with any accessory bbl

it has to do with the heat treatment of the frames

I've got a Handi-Rifle in .270 and I have a 30-30 barrel that fits it as well. I also have a 12 ga. Pardner.
I mainly have these for my kids to use rather than give them an expensive gun for hunting and they end up damaging the thing.

I think they are good cheap guns, and accurate enough for their purpose.

In Mississippi this year they are allowing single shot rifles with exposed hammers in calibers used before 1900 to be used for deer hunting in what was the black powder season. The H&R in 45-70 is in great demand

I've been looking, but I can't seem to find prices. How much does the Buffalo Classic in .45-70 cost?
