Has anyone tried these 168 Mil-Spec .30 from Wideners? $93/500 is a heck of a deal. I'm wondering if they're basically the same thing as Sierra 168 MKs.

They are not even close to Sierra's. I have used the 175 surplus "match" from Widener's, and they vary about .8 of a grain on my digital scale! No free lunch. When I weigh them and load in similar weight batches, I still get horrible groups and fliers out of my 700P. The SMK'a give me 3/4 MOA. Hope this helps.

Wideners is real loose with the term "mil-spec". There is no military specification for the 168gr HPBT and 175gr FMJBT bullets they are selling. Buy quality and cry once, buy cheap and ...

Don

I've been told that the mil-spec bullets are made by PRVI and highpower shooters over on the nationalmatch.us forums have reported good accuracy results thus far.

If you're shooting at reduced ranges (ie < 300yds) accuracy should not be a problem. For long range shooting, you'd probably notice a significant difference.

I've got 1k of the 168gr bullets but have yet to load them up. I've moved to Nosler 168gr for my match ammo and will use the PRVI as practice rounds

They aren't even close to the Hornady Match bullets but when the Hornady bullets are $30/100 and the Sierra are $35/100 the Widener's bullets aren't bad @ $18.60/100. (before shipping)

So, did you ever load the Widener's 168gr HPBT bullets and give them a try? I'm curious about your results as I am contemplating ordering some.

Sierra's 30 caliber 168's shoot 1/4th MOA average and rarely if ever does any one 10-shot group go over 1/3 MOA at 200 yards in their production tests. Often better.

Any claims from Wideners as to the accuracy they get? Any data showing Widener's bullets winning matches and setting records along the way? Sierra bullets have been doing this since the 1950's.

I'm not after any records. Just looking for fodder for my M1 that might be better than the pulled M2 I'm using now.

I use good match bullets in matches. I use bulk bullets for practice and fun shooting. Both bullets have their place and the bulk bullets can save you some money when not shooting a match.

So far, the Nosler 168 gr HPBT's are shooting great out of my 700 tactical, they are about 10 cents/bullet cheaper too, at 22 cents.

I just got some 168 Mil-Spec .308 from Wideners $93/500, but have not loaded or shot them yet. I would love to be able to give a shooting report soon.

A while back Widener's had more written up on their sithe than they do now.

I can tell you this about them. The W's are longer. The tips don't seem as uniform. The edge of the boat tail base has a bit of a ridge on some. The Sierra's seem to have a longer section that measures .308 inch. The W's don't measure .308 til nearer the base. The profile is different. Color is different - not that it matters, but I assume the alloy differs.

I am speculating that the Sierra's will be easier to seat straight and stay that way.

Nosler 168 competition bullets work as well as the 168 SMK for my Rem 700 R5.
They are virtually the same price as the Widener 168 so called match bullets from who knows where. They are $189.00/1000 from Midway. I don't mine using a lesser quality bullet for plinking and practice but a bargain bullet needs to be bought at a bargain price. If they cost as much as the real deal then why buy?

tjj,
"If they cost as much as the real deal then why buy?"

3 simple word: Out of Stock.

I got some to try & was sort of a panic buy. I couldn't find other 168's at the time. I didn't know that Midway had the Noslers that cheap in the 1K qty. If the Widener's 168's have bad accuracy the savings is not worth it to me. All the rest of the cost is still there. Primer, Powder, Prep, Travel etc.

I'm in SE Louisiana also. My neighbor had good results with the Nosler & Honardy. It is pretty cool to have a neighbor to work with on reloading & shooting. He gave me some of the Noslers.
