Does anyone know about portugues ammo. If it anygood 1984.non corr m180 ball ,I found it at some place on the web ,midwest-outfitters for 725 per thousand. But I have never shot any

That ammo is some of the best of the best that is out there.
At that price I would call it insanely overpriced but I bought my stash back when it was going for $150.00 a thousand round case or $34.95 for a 200 round battle pack.

The surplus 200 packs in Sportsman Guide and JGSales catalogs I got this week were ~$130 per 200. You can buy new Federal 308 at walmart for $12.47 per box of 20. I know the winchester white box generally still goes for ~$130/200 at midway, ammuntiontogo, and copes. I have no idea which surplus is the better stuff, but the federal at walmart is said to be very accurate stuff. I would want non-corrosive stuff, and reloadable brass from anything I bought so only some surplus would meet that.

I have a bunch of Portuguese 5.56 in 5-400 round battle packs to a case purchased about 20 years ago. Very clean, excellent accuracy, and wish I could find more (at the price I paid then.) :)

I agree! Very clean and accurate. Better than most new ammo on the market.

I ordered several cases when it was $134 per case to your door.
Lately I've seen it selling for around $650 per case.

Have to agree the Portuguese is good ammo, 2nd only to the Aussie stuff which seems to be all but unobtainable anymore.

that is very good ammo for milsurp, that and if you can find any of the old south american/nazi stuff; chilean, venezuelan, argentine, etc. Some of the nazis' stopped over in Portugal after ww2 as well, proly why theirs is so good as well...

non reloadable but good stuff. If I get my tax return tomorrow I am buying 750 rounds.

I just placed an order for a case of Radway Green. I've never shot it, but every internet thread that I have read seems to indicate that it's at least reasonably good. These days you can't be to picky when looking for .50 cents a round.

Anyway just a heads up to y'all, Samco Global has Portuguese Surplus from the 80's for about .47 cents a round. I haven't dealt with them before so I decided to buy the Radway Green.

this is why I wish I had a crystal ball...

Man...people saying that Port is the best out there...I remember turning my nose up at Port in favor of Hirterberger. I honestly don't know just how much Hirt I went through with my first FAL. And the fact that I wasn't reloading back then makes it an even more bitter pill to swallow...I know I left more than 3000 pieces of brass on the ground. :(

I have two battle packs left...I keep hoping that they will mate and make more.

Really! Hirtenberger was prime stuff... just as the .30/06 and .308 Lake City stuff was years back. Ahhhhhhh.... I yearn for the good 'ole days.

Speaking of Radway Green ammo and the bad current days, I saw that a Dunhams Sport store had 120 round cans of the RG ammo for $139 a can.
That's outrageous too!

I can remember the not too distant past where this stuff was selling for $35 a can and $150 for a five can crate and that price was considered too high at the time.

I am thinking of stocking up on some more .308. I see good deals on Portguese and Radway Green. The Radway Green has the NATO stamp and is on stripper clips. I was told that it is the best of the best surplus, but everyone seems to have their own opinions. Seeing I can get Radway Green 0.55/bullet shipped to my door in stripper clips, Iwas thinking it was a smokin deal. What do others think? S hould I go for Portugeuse or Radway Green? I already have bought some of Prvi Partizan match and have some Lithuanian Surplus, as well as some Hornady as my special stash.

I am thinking I want some plinking ammo, but I don't know perse of the quality of Radway Green. Wouldn't havin the NATO stamp make the Radway Green batch a higher quality than the Portuguese?

any former british empire countries are usually good , to include us, but not including India... run away from anything Indian(the sub continent of)

Wish I could tell you, but I have no experience with either, I think the Radway Green that Aim Surplus has is berdan primed (non reloadable) and is from the mid 90's. The Port I think is from the mid 80's and I think it's boxer primed. I ordered from AIM because of positive past experience, but I may try to scrounge a bit more money for some of that Port too.
As for the NATO stamp, Australian ammo didn't have the NATO stamp, but from my experience and what others say it was pretty good stuff. IMO the NATO stamp guarantees its will be at least of a certain quality, but the lack thereof doesn't guarantee inferior quality necessarily.

Australilan 7.62X51 is also good stuff if still available. The India ammo is a little spooky. Most shoots good but a few rounds make "funny" noises.

An aquaintence of mine said he stopped reloading .308 when he discovered Portugese milsurp ammo. Apparently it's more than very good.

Now the price has come down and surplus is rolling in at $4/box.

Do you really think it is going to be $4/box? I was planning on getting some stuff and it is $10/box :( .. I wonder is it a big mistake to buy mil-surp ammo? Will its price go down again like to 3 years ago? I am planning on stocking up, because I am told its drying up and no more is being allowed into the country and ammo prices in general are just rising.

I picked up a box of Federal 150gr $12.47/box at walmart the other week and shot it out of my 700p yesterday. Took me 16 rounds to zero (started at 25y then 100y), then shot remaining 4 rounds at 100yds and all rounds were touching in the bulls eye. I'm not sure how to measure moa, but all are in the 1" bullseye so I assume that means it shoots lower than 1 moa. Its hard to imagine any other budget ammo that good. Still looking at surplus but leaning more to new federal now. The first time I have even fired a bolt action.

Don't discount the Indian OHV ammo from the 70's if you can find it cheap. Its M80 spec sealed bullet and primer. It was made under British supervision using Radway tooling and components. It often gets overlooked and can be found for cheap already on strippers packaged for the Indian Enfields. I was getting it for $17 a bandoleer (50 rounds) and shot well. Stay far away from anything after those dates as the British were gone and QC went to complete crap. The stuff made in the 90's is awful. So if you see some don't overpay but if it is 1970's and clean you may have a deal on you hands. Bill

Very, very good ammo, but at a price that should come with an included, naked, and morally relaxed college co-ed.

John
