This is something my father-in-law sent to me today...I thought it was very good.

Sorry if this has already been around before...

Why I Carry a Gun

My old grandpa said to me son,' there comes a time in every man's life when he stops bustin' knuckles and starts bustin' caps and usually it's when he becomes too old to take an ass whoopin'. I don't carry a gun to kill people. I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don't carry a gun to scare people.
I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.

I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid.
I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I'm evil.
I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I hate the government.
I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don't carry a gun because I'm angry.
I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone.
I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't carry a gun because I'm a cowboy.
I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a cowboy.

I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man. I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate. I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

I don't carry a gun because I love it. I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful
to me.

Police Protection is an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect themselves. Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take an ass whoopin'.

...author unknown (but obviously brilliant)

I am one of those old guys who does not want to take a a$$ whoopin...:D

It's a cute poem, but the fact is, the law generally requires you to take a moderate beat down rather than draw on an unarmed assailant.

DUKE OF DOUBT - "It's a cute poem, but the fact is, the law generally requires you to take a moderate beat down rather than draw on an unarmed assailant."

Not in Idaho, either. :)

L.W.

Montana: "The right of any person to keep or bear arms in defense of his own home, person, and property, or in aid of the civil power when thereto legally summoned, shall not be called in question, but nothing herein contained shall be held to permit the carrying of concealed weapons." Mont. Const. art. II, 12.

Need I say More!!

The only person I ever had ask me about my reasoning behind carrying a gun was my mother. She wondered why I carried at home.

I said, "Mom, what's to keep someone from kicking down that door right now and doing whatever they want? Do you think a cop could get here before someone could get from that door to you or me?"

Duke, the law in Tennessee doesn't discuss whether the guy is unarmed or not - if a reasonable person would believe that I was about to suffer serious bodily harm, I can defend myself by means of a gun. I am a reasonable person and I BELIEVE a beatdown is serious bodily harm.

I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate. I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

This one stood out to me as being the most honest and relevant statement of all of them. You can replace the "...and facing three armed thugs..." with just about anything including government. And since it's tax season, the "IRS" would fit nicely in that slot. haha

Not in Ohio.....

I am officially old enough to not be taking a butt kicking, or wanting to see if I lose. I'm big enough to have a good chance, but been around enough not to want to find out, and have enough people depending on me that I'm not going to!

I don't mean to sound anal, but let me chime in my analysis to help you understand reality:

It does not matter if a "beating" is minor, moderate or severe. Anything that you can articulate as something that you feel is a genuine threat to your life is justifiable. Regardless of how big or threatening a perp is, it does not matter if he is armed with a knife, gun, etc. The ground is a weapon, a rock is a weapon, his/her teeth/hands are weapons.

If for some reason you are being BEATEN, by all means, you can draw down. Do you have to shoot? Not at all. What does the perp(s) do after you draw? Do they run? Do they stay and fight more? Do they laugh and try to grab your gun? Each of these responses should constitute one of two reactions: fire or keep your fore sight fixed until you get a chance to decide the 2 notions again.
