Contemplating my next rifle purchase, something that will be a good all around SHTF rifle. Which would you choose, ammo cost not being an issue.

AR: it is the standard by which all SHTF's are judged. Be sure and ckeck out an M1A Scout too.

I choose other because I was unsure if you meant a DI AR or a gas piston AR, so I pick a gas piston AR, or a sturdy bolt-action for SHTF, whichever you like better.

My $.03, yea that's right .03 cents not .02 :neener:

SHTF rifle

I chose an AR type rifle because of ammo availability, BUT, I would actually p
refer an M14 type because of , Ammo availability and power of the ctge.

:D:D:D

when i think of, SHTF, a reliable tough bolt gun or AK mod comes to mind. Don't get me wrong, i love the AR design, and i'm sure that they're great, reliable rifles, but think of it in terms of "which gun TYPICALLY needs the least maintainence/ parts?"

I'm not trying to insinuate that ARs are fragile and require lots of care, because i know most of them arent, but i dont see them adding up to a well-built bolt action rifle in terms of longevity.

just my humble opinion

The M1 Garand is my favorite rifle. I purchased 3 Garands before I purchased my first AR. I generally don't sell firearms but if I had to the AR would go before my Garands.

With that said as a pure SHTF rifle I would probably get an AR over a Garand but I would choose an AK over the AR for that purpose anyday.....lol I had to throw that in!

as for the ar, standard, non gas piston. garand because they are a proven rifle with a good round and price, 600 or less. other, you fill that in.

my thinking of SHTF is a do all, hunt, defend, use as a boat oar, club.

I voted other in favor of an AK. Most reliable semi auto, 7.62 caliber, is not picky when it comes to ammo, and it will take abuse. Also you don't need a bag of spare parts, just extra mags and ammo.

i ar rifles and garands.

i chose garand because with an ar, if the bad guy is hiding behind concrete or bricks, you have to wait for him to come out.

not so much with a garand. just guess and shoot.

it really barks.

OTHER

A Ruger Mini 14 or 30 would be my choice. I feel it is a rifle that can eat all sorts of ammo (unlike the finicky AR) and deliver practical accuracy at 100yds. I would purchase my SHTF based on what kind of ammo I feel will be more available (7.62x39 and .223 are more plentiful that 30-06 IMO), or I could stock up on. FWIW, I own both and copious amounts of ammo for both of 'em..

Love the AR an Garand, but voted for Garand. Imagine 8 rd. enbloc clips with alternet rds. being armour piercing, maybe throw in a couple tracers if the SHTF....where an what is the BG going to hide behind...?
