I have an older Winchester Super X Model 1 in 12 gauge and am looking where I might be able to get a replacement magazine spring and some extra O-rings for this gun. It was having problems ejecting and so I replaced the spring with what a guy told me should work. It was not the right spring and now the gun is having problems. The parts for this seem to be very hard to find. If someone could point me in the right direction or has any helpful advice regarding this shotgun it would all be greatly appreciated. Other than cleaning, is there any other upkeep needed?

Thanks

A super x-1 should cycle reliably with even light 7/8 oz loads. The only real frustrating problems I've ever had with a super x-1 not quite wanting to eject well was caused by the barrel gas ports not quite lining up with the rest of the gas system.

More specifically, I've had two that had such cycling problems. I eventually determined that the problem in both cases was caused by forend wood that was just a little short; on these two, with the cap tight (and re-tighten again after firing a couple shells), the forend wood would still have a little "wiggle"--which kept the barrel from being securely seated. The best solution I came up with was to improvise a spacer between the forend wood the barrel extension to take up the extra space (I used a fairly heavy o-ring that fits slightly snug to the outside of the magazine).

And, I agree with BTJohn regarding the buffer--a pretty important part to have in place on a super x-1, when they're missing damage both the receiver and bolt can result.

Try Midwest Gun Works. I Don't have the website handy, but I have ordered Super x 1 parts from them in the past on line. The service was excellent.

Just picked up a very nice SXM1, took it out to shoot, and the safety is set up for a lefty. ouch...is it possible to reverse the safety, or do I need a new trigger assembly?

It can be reversed. Here are the directions for the right to left changeover.

"LEFT HAND SAFETY

...remove the trigger guard assembly. Rotate the safety and push it out the right side of the trigger guard. Turn the safety around and insert the end with the red band into the left side of the trigger guard, noting that the plunger detent surface (w-shaped cut) is faced down. The safety plunger in the trigger guard must be depressed, using a small screwdriver, to allow the safety to enter the guard. Close the action and test the safety. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THIS CONVERSION BE ACCOMPLISHED BY A GUNSMITH."

- From the Winchester SX-1 owner's manual.

A reproduction is available from Rediscovered Shooting Treasures if you can't find the manual on the net for free. Sometimes spending $7.95 is easier than googling if what you're looking for doesn't turn up in the first 5 minutes.
