Hey all,
I'm looking to get a new pistol. My criteria for any pistol I buy is this:
1. Must be DA/SA with safety and decocker
2. I prefer 40 S&W
3. Must have a visible hammer.
4. Mid size to large frame, no preference of steel or polymer

The ones I'm so far interested in are:
The FNH FNP-40, or the newer FNH FNX-40
The Taurus M800
Baretta PX4 Storm.
So any experiences and opinions of them would be welcome. And please, add any opinions on any other guns that you know of that have the same criteria I've listed. I'd also love to know if any LE department or military units are using any of these. Thanks

Well since the FNX-40 is an FNP-40 with some minor alterations, I would think of them as being basically identical. I would also think of them, based on my experience with the FNP-9M, as bascially ideal. Do it. Go with the wonderful FNP or whatever FNH wants to call them, they have such nice triggers for their class of gun, they are smooth, they are slim compared to all the competition, they have outstanding (read:I have never seen better after owning about ten or more different pistols, all of which had different sights) sights, truly wonderful sights, they are reliable as hell too.

Nothing wrong with your other choices, but personally, the FNP is a superb pistol and it will be the next pistol I buy. They are everything the USP and Sig pistols want to be but the FNP is better. You may question that bold statement, but I like my FNP-9M much more than the dreamgun USP .40 I bought first. And I'm going to expand my FNP collection when I can.

Oh and also I wouldn't worry too much about .40 vs 9mm, whichever one you can get a better deal on in the platform of your choice (which should probably be FNP, all things considered) go with, I don't find the recoil of a .40 all that noticeably worse than a 9mm, and I don't think 9mm is weak or ineffectual for use against people.

I prefer the 40, besides, I've been reloading 40 for my current Taurus. This is just my opinion, and I can't say this from any actual experience. The thing that has delayed me on the fnh fnp series is that the safety and decocker seemed flimsy to me, in the aspect that it seemed like it could be bent inward our outward fairly easily. The fnx lever looks like an improvement with practically everything else being identical to the fnp.

The older lever looks like ass but it is sturdy. I do like that little touchup they did to it, hopefully they'll start making or importing or whatever the compact model again, and make a .40 to go with it.

I've never met a Sig owner that wasn't stoked. Though it was my understanding that no Sig models have both a safety and decocker, and that's why they're not on my list

The FN P40 has a decocker but no external safety, so far all the suggestions except the S&W are SA/DA with decocker and internal safeties only. I cannot recommend a S&W pistol, they make great revolvers, ( Taurus makes good revolvers) I have owned the Model 39-2 and Model 59 Smith pistols. Get the FNH pistol or a SIG or an H&K, I currently own 5 SIGS, FN FiveseveN, 2 H&K USPs, 3 Beretta's (my favorite Beretta is the 92FS) and a locker full of various 1911s. FNH makes great pistols get one or several, if you want a compact however, I would recommend the CZ PCR. Just my experiences.

But the FN USG does have both a safety and manual decocker. Check out this video regardng the FN features: FN's Video

Edited to add: I keep harping on FN guns. There's something about them that I really like. Now if I only had the cash for a SCAR.....

Jed,
According to the fnh web site, all fnp's and FNX's have decocker/safety. I also looked at the fnp 40 at bass pro a couple months ago, and I could have sworn it had one. The new FNX looks like it has the same safety/decocker as the USG. I don't know why they don't have the USG on the fnh USA site.

I'm a bit confused on the FN guns, too. The gun sellers' websites seem to state that some of the base model FNPs can be had w/ safety and decocker. The video emphasizes that the USG has both, and perhaps (?) the new FX model is a new model to replace the USG. Anyway, it seems that you can get the safety & decocker on several models.

I like the concept of being able to replace the steel rails if necessary, as well as the different backstraps that come with the gun, as well as the 3 mags that come with the gun (Sig could learn something from FN!). And they are American made, and something a little different. Like I said, I'm turning into a strange FN fan.....

First, I have to admit that I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to handguns. I have never owned a handgun, but have shot 9mm, 40S&W, and 45ACP handguns on multiple occasions.

I have just recently begun my search for my first handgun and I have very similar requirements to yours. Here are the firearms I found in my own search that you may be interested in:

FN Herstal
FNP-9 USG
FNP-9M (compact) w/ DA/SA & Manual Safety
FNP-40 USG
FNP-45 USG
FNX-9
FNX-40

According to the fnh web site, all fnp's and FNX's have decocker/safety. I also looked at the fnp 40 at bass pro a couple months ago, and I could have sworn it had one.
This is not the case. FNH offers the FNP models in decocker only and decocker/safety or "USG" models. If you are looking at the FNP series, be sure to be looking for a USG model.

Here's an FNP-40 USG for $526: http://www.wholesalehunter.com/product.asp?ref=gb&productid=53048

I have not seen too many FNX's on the market yet. Here is the only Internet vendor offering the FNX-40 with the manual safety - $600: http://www.midwesthuntersoutlet.com/item.aspx?PID=193258&w=PQ+JDyOLrQE=

Taurus
PT-809
PT-840
PT-845

At 8.25" this is a pretty big gun for only having a 4" barrel. The FNs are 3/4" shorter with the same barrel length.

Here's a Taurus PT-840 for $469: http://www.gunenvystore.com/index.p...edium=cse&utm_campaign=export_feed#googlebase

Heckler & Koch
HK45
USP
USP Compact
P30S

I have average to slightly below average sized hands, and the USP Compact and P30 are a perfect fit. I just can't justify spending the extra $300 for one when the FN is basically a Sig with a manual safety and the Taurus is starting to make more quality polymer firearms.

Beretta
PX4 Storm Model F

I didn't like the fact that the safety/decocker was on the slide, it felt awkward trying to use it. For a similar price I would much rather have an FNP or FNX.

Good luck in your search.

Is the P89 the rugers? If so, I have handled them and they are large for my hands. A longer reach to the trigger with them being so wide. I can spend the money for a sig or HK, so they aren't out of the question. I've never met a sig or hk owner that wasn't completely satisfied. I have handled the USP, and didn't care for the feel. I'm still open, I don't hav the oppurtunity to rent and try much in my area, as we only have one gun store with range that rents guns in my area.

I would go with the FNP-9, but it's a tough call. I own both the FNP-9 and the Beretta PX4 Storm and they're both great. Each is among the best in the breed, including several of the SIGs, but you can't overlook three magazines that come with the FN handguns.

I bought the FNP-9 first after trying a number of different pistols. The only pistols I liked as much as the FN were the Beretta and the SIG Sauer P226. The SIG was hundreds of dollars more expensive and the Beretta had just two magazines and was about $50.00 more expensive. I didn't hold out for the manual safety USG because I am quite happy with the security the decocker offers. It drops the hammer to a "half-cock" position to prevent UDs while keeping the gun ready to fire with just a full pull of the trigger.

I bought the PX4 Storm for two reasons: First, to go with the CX4 carbine I had bought to join the Space Marines. All kidding aside, I like the PX4 as much as I like the FNP. I did deliberately get the Model F because I like a real hammer that I can thumb back if I wish. The second reason is that Academy had a super price of $519, which was better than I found anywhere, including online. I did augment the magazine collection and now have four 17-round magazines and two-20-round magazines that I can use in either gun.

Between the three guns, I can load all the magazines, add a round in the chamber and be able to fire 159 rounds without reloading.

BTW: I went with 9mm because of ammunition. When I bought the FN, ammo was in short supply and 9mm was both available more often and less expensive the .40 S&W. IMHO, 9mm is just about as good as .40 S&W as a S/D round and more pleasant to shoot.

Both guns are fun to shoot, accurate, easy to strip for cleaning, feel great in the hand, come with various grip inserts to allow a bit of custom-fitting, if desired.

Some complain about the slide-mounted safety on the PX4, but it doesn't bother me. The majority of automatic pistols I have owned had similar safeties and the one on the PX4 is smooth and easy to disengage with my thumb.

The PX4 has a slight advantage when it comes to selection of ready-made holsters. You can get good holsters for either gun, but when it comes to holsters like the Blackhawk CQC or Fobus, you can't yet get one for the FNP. Safariland and Bianchi do have holsters for the FN and either gun will ride in an Uncle Mike's nylon holster.

Both the FN or the Beretta are good choices. The best suggestion I can offer is to see which one feels best in your own hands and go with that one. Either way, you wind up with a really nice pistol.
