Meet THE Mr. McDonald

A good article. McDonald will be viewed by some as the Rosa Parks of RKBA. He has moxie as evidenced by his refusal to move and saying that he'll do what is necessary to stand up for what he believes is right.

Nice man, we could all use neighbors like that.

Subtle observation on the writing style:
  • Nearly every time they talk about supporters of gun rights, they use the term "libertarian activists". Surely our rights span farther than libertarian views.
  • Oddly, they don't find a label for supporters of gun control. They only mention the Mayor, or the City's ban on handguns.
Not trying to criticize the writer. Just observing that our use of language has an odd way of slanting views. I hope it was inadvertent.

True enough, but this is a surprisingly sympathetic characterization of a 2A "activist," especially coming from a mainstream source such as the Chicago Tribune.

I agree, Mark.

I hope the Tribune continues this approach throughout the Supreme Court hearings.

Farther than libertarian views? Anarchist? :)

HMMMM.....Anarchist activist!!!!!!!! :)

Nice to see a mainstream media source show a normal person as a gun rights activists, not the 'bubba' in overalls they like to make people believe is the only person who likes gun.

Kind of sad a 76 year old man has to go through the trouble of hundreds of court hearings, and all the fuss of taking down a ban that never should have existed.

The lawyers who chose Mr. McDonald did an excellent job. He is an extremely sympathetic figure as evidenced by the tone of the article. He has a clear need for a handgun for personal protection and his constitutional rights are currently being violated.

Good Article. I hope they prevail, for all the good citizens of the WindyCity.
OT if you want to see some more Anti idiocy read the comments to the article

The Gura appeals are certainly libertarian in outlook, so I don't think it's inappropriate to speak of him as a libertarian activist. Obviously there is a broader RKBA movement, but these court cases have been distinctly libertarian in approach--often to the chagrin of the more GOP-dominated NRA.

Cool story, thanks...What I hate is how long it takes cases to get to higher courts. The incidents in Mr. McDonald's case happened on 4/28/08. By the time the case gets argued in the Supreme Court, it will be about 2 years later, and I think that's fast on average. I don't have time for these long delays!

Yes, we have here good facts for a successful outcome at the Supreme Court. On the flip side, the result may be narrow because Mr. McDonald has a need for a gun, is old, is white (correction: he's black), is law abiding, lives in a bad neighborhood, etc. Will the Supreme Court result also help protect the gun rights of the law abiding 21-year-old black man who lives in a good neighborhood and who merely "wants" a gun? We'll have to wait and see.

Oops, my mind told me he was white based on the pic. I quickly skimmed the article, and my mind still registered him as being white because of the pic.

That raises another issue. What good is an African American stereotype if he looks white? Hmmm.
