Lots and lots of 18.5 inch Remington 870's out there.

LAPD used the Ithaca 37

IRS is buying 14 inch 870's

What assault rifle/shotgun/small machine gun/short barreled shotgun would you ride with if you had your choice?

I've always thought a good lever action would be effective. Especially a 45-70.
M-4 or M-14 would do in a pinch too.

Riding in the cab would be a short shotgun, probably around 12-16" barrel and preferable semi auto

On the hip would be Ruger P89, I've had several and never had any issues and 9mm is still a common caliber, albeit not as devastating as larger calibers. But 100,000 gang members can't be wrong.

In the trunk, if I had my way, H&K G36 5.56 and a Barret 98 Bravo in .338 lapua

M-4.

Light, handy, high capacity mags, accurate, good performance from heavier BTHP rounds.

Remington 870 20" with extended mag in car, AR-15A2 in trunk and the Hollywood Duo would have been down in about a Minute after the first squad arrived. You need something for close and dirty (870) and something to reach out and touch someone (in the head if armoured) AR-15.
Just an aside someone mentioned 30-30 levergun, that wouldn't be my first choice but it's a damn good one for a trunk gun.

14.5" piston AR in 6.8SPC with a free float rail, white light, Aimpoint, BUIS and a good removable can on the end.

My current rig is an A2M4gery in a vertical rack alongside a dedicated 'less-lethal' 870--which just means it has an orange stock and the only ammo we carry for it is bean bags & rubber buckshot. It's a nice tool to have along when there are enough guys to support less lethal coverage. The AR has pretty well won me over as a platform--but I would be happy to tweak it a bit as noted.

squad car implies (to me) urban, semi-urban, in-town patrol

leave the centerfire rifles and 100 yard shots to the SWAT guys
that is what the radio is for
(same for ARs, AKs, M-16s, M-14s, UZIs, "machine guns", and grenade launchers)

every squad car oughta' have both a pistol caliber carbine (16" to 18" barrel w/ shoulder stock, of course) and any one of the usual 12 gauge pumpers, both secured but readily available
what you carry when leaving the squad car being situational

nothing beats the intimidation factor of the 12 ga up close and personal, but carbine is far more shootable & effective for less close and well aimed

I would go with 357 mag lever action carbine (w/ 357), 12 gauge, companion 357 revolver (w/ 38+P)
but "the dept" will likely insist on a semi-auto pistol, so match carbine caliber to handgun caliber in any/all cases

Ar-15 style .223 would be my choice, due to it's longer range capability and accuracy. I figure the close up encounters are involving the handgun anyway. A 12 gauge shotgun is great, but doesn't due well with distance for shot placement.

Not an LEO, so my opinion's not the one you're looking for. But I think an M79 would be nice to use on crack houses.:uhoh:

A Dillon will do.

Fn-fal. I keep thinking about the north hollywood shootout. Had one of the first responders had a .30 cal anything, and knew how to use it, well it might've ended a bit sooner.

That would have probably included the lowly lever action. Someone here has a sig line that says something about accuracy being final. I think that is true as is the notion that you can't supplant skill with equipment or capacity.

14" Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 or 590 for shotgun.

Springfield Armory Socom 16 for a rifle.
