Anyone sold their gold for cash, and used it for a new gun?

Took a bunch of junk from me and my wife's jewelry box and thought I may get enough for a new gun. I thought $400 maybe $500. (new AK maybe)

I GOT $1800!!! Wow!

I'm glad people are using it for something other than drugs. Does anyone else think that Cash for Gold is the crackheads best friend? They don't even have to go to the pawn shop in the next town anymore.

What gun/s are you thinking of buying?

ok so what are you getting??? details!!

I've been thinking of cashing in my wedding set now that the divorce is final and all but I didn't figure it would bring very much, perhaps I should try it.

Cash for gold is the biggest scam around. You will get pennies on the dollar on what the jewelry is worth. Better off selling the jewelry as a piece instead of gold to be melted.

I knew a divorced lady who sold her $3,000 diamond engagement ring to one of these outfits for $200. She would have done better on eBay.

Yes, I know this isn't gun related! But, I too want to know what you got with it! :)

It's actually not pennies.

It's about 60% of the "pure" value. It's done by the gram and/or penny weight.

Everything that we sold was stuff that hadn't been touched in years. I believe that some of it was so old that I may have received the same that we paid for it back when gold was $235 / oz.

Sorry this is not about guns - but I promise I'll get one with these funds.:)

well, about guns or not this is informative to some of us and I'm sure you'll let us know what you get with the $$ ;)

I hope the wife was in on this and ok with it ... otherwise she'll be telling her friends one day "I took a bunch of junk from my husbands gun safe, sold it and bought this nifty new jewelry!" :neener:

Ever notice how these cash for gold outfits popped up right during the midst of this deep recession? Its no coincidence, they just prey on peoples misfortunes. If you got $1800, rest assured it was worth WAY more.

If the OP sent the scrap gold to a smelter like Northern or Hoover and Strong then he got as much as he could expect to out of it. Jewelers and the "cash for gold" places send scrap gold there as well.

To keep this gun-related, we have a customer who likes to pay in ounces of silver (the bars, not scrap). Takes all kinds, I guess.

Sort of on-topic, I just saw a cash for gold commercial offering you "money now" for your gold. Then, when you get your tax return, you can buy back your gold.

Um.......is this some new way to get around pawn shop lending rules and regulations?

I tried doing this, but the only gold piece of jewelry I have other than my wedding band turned out to be plated crap. Nuts.

If selling gold, it is best to find an honest, reputable local jeweler that buys gold. We are fortunate to have a good one 5 minutes down the road. He'll tell you if the jewelry in question is worth more in it's weight in gold vs as a piece of jewelry or vice versa. And when my wife bought a gold chain to shorten, he actually gave her cash from the small bits that were no longer needed. Awesome.

My wife goes around with a jeweler loop and hits up the local thrift shops and antique stores and buys crap looking gold bracelets and such for a few bucks, then sells them for $20-$40. Others do it too though, so it's not a huge money maker. More of a hobby.

She did have a set of gold cuflinks she bought 10 years ago for $5 at a thrift shop. Sold them a few weeks ago for their weight in gold (they were broken) for $350.

That'd be a gun right there, but that isn't her thing. Oh well.

I, too, am interested in what you plan on buying with your windfall.

I'm also interested in what your wife plans to buy with her share of the proceeds.

Last year, solsd an id bracelet from the 70's and bought a pf-9
