If so, what do you carry? I have been carrying the Colt detective for many years IWB but am thinking of a smaller -lighter pocket gun as a second gun, along with my knife.
How many of you carry a second gun?

no. i carry either a SW snubby in the pocket or a Glock IWB. if you prefer to carry two, that's cool.
the only other items on me are keys, a 3" folder, cell, and wallet.

I do now that I have a new to me 340PD, and it is like not carry of a second gun! I use to actually carry a full size 1911 and a compact 1911 as backup. Now I just carry the full size 1911 and the PD if I do carry a backup.

Ruger 4-inch .357 Service Six with speed loader in the truck at all times....S&W J-frame with .38SPL+P 125 grain JHP loaded and two speed-loaders of same on my person 90% of the time (L-frame or Sig P239 the other 10% of the time)...
As a non-LEO, I think my chances of ever needing my primary carry weapon is about .0001% - chances of needing a BUG????? I don't want to second-guess anyone's choices of what they need for personal protection, but do you really live/move around in areas that present that much of a threat? Not bashing - just asking.

Only one gun on me but if you consider car guns as carrying, then I carry a couple extra guns.

I do not consider car guns as a second carry gun as such
I have read repeatedly from people like Ed Lovette, who writes for Combat handguns , that one should consider an extra gun , and his rationale was that more than 50% of the confrontations were very physical preventing one from getting to his CCW. Having a second gun would have allowed the individual a chance to use his other hand in drawing the other gun.My brother who was in law enforecment for 40 years also backs that idea up. He always carries 2 small guns for this reason , one on each side. However , I have resisted the temptation and wanted feed back from this thread. Thanks for all the replies.

a farmer for the past 50 years as well. I live in a rural area , and most of my life has been on a farm and do farming now part time. Not much crime around here.That said , my wife and I do go out and about to the city as well and take in University sporting events etc too as well as the shopping sprees.A second pocket gun would add some protection if the need arise. Just thinking and considering at this point.

Yes. I carry some combination of SIG P229 and Ruger SP101. I own several of each, so the second gun can be a twin of the first gun. On rare occasions, one of the guns might be a 1911 or larger-framed sixgun. I don't concern myself with such terminology as "primary" and "back-up" guns, though I do tend to virtually always wear one gun in the same place, and that go-to gun is double action.

Dear Snooperman,
I've been trying practice drills where I have to draw my gun with the other hand. The difficulty of this maneuver has me thinking about another gun for the other side, even if just an NAA mini or something like that.

Generally, I carry a 1911 as primary... usually strong side 3-4:00 IWB with a taurus 445 .44 special in my weak side front pocket.

Ed Lovette, author of "The snubby revolver", states that he did research on crime incidents involving CCW from 1958 to 1990 and found that in 50% of the attacks it involved physical confrontation whereby the good guys were either knocked down and beaten or could not draw his weapon with his hand but could have used his other hand if there was a weapon available to that hand or other side. Hence my interest in carrying another CCW for that purpose. My brother who is a Criminologist who worked for DEA and in Law enforcement for many years agrees with Lovette on this as well. One thing that stands out , is that this type of confrontation happens very quickly with little time to react.

On duty I carry my Sig P-220 on the waist and a 9mm EMP on my ankle. Off duty I usually carry just the EMP (more easily concealed) when I'm out in urban areas or my own P-220 (not my issued one) IWB or at least under a longer jacket or shirt so it's concealed. I own several other sidearms too that I'll switch out every once in a while when I get the itch....
When I go hiking in the area I'll usually take my P-220 or Taurus Tracker .357 revolver. I'm not worried about carrying concealed when I'm out hiking so I usually have them in a holster. Being a "local" here, I tend to stray away from the popular tourist hiking areas and hit the more obscure (and IMHO better) hiking trails in the area and I rarely see another soul the entire time. Open carry is perfectly legal here in NH too so it's nice to just be able to strap it on and get out the door.

Primary is a G26 in a recently acquired Crossbreed holster. I still have been carrying my
P3AT in my pocket. Not that I think my Glock needs a backup, but I am just use to having the Kel-Tec on me. I recently have been tryng to carry the G26 more often because after my most recent CHL renewal I realized how slow drawing my weapon from a pocket is.

When doable with the level of clothing I'm wearing, if I am heading somewhere with lots of people I do indeed carry a second gun. Right now, primary's a S&W 620, secondary's a S&W 638 carried weakside.
