I have been looking into reliable, yet inexpensive firearms to have on hand for target shooting/huntung/defense and god forbid, a shtf scenario. Not everyone has thousands of dollars to dedicate to firearms..I know I dont haha.

So far, I have been thinking that a good overall rifle would be the mosin nagant. It is cheap, ammo is cheap, and you can own a few if you wanted. Im not saying its the best, but it could be used to put food on your table and defense.

I would think that you would want a basic shotgun and handgun to accompany it as well. Is there any shotgun/handgun workhorses that are as cheap (ammo as well) and reliable as the mosin nagant?

A 12 guage pump new or used can be had relatively inexpensively. Used S&W .38 Special thru J&G Sales or a used quality revolver in .357 magnum or .38 Special locally.
A used semiauto in 9mm, 40 S&W or .45 Auto or something from Keltec or Taurus.
Nothing wrong with a Mosin-Nagant but you can get a new Stevens or a used something in 30-06 or .308 with a scope for not too much more and it's much easier to reload the ammo.

I would personally choose any other bolt gun. Even an 8mm RC Mauser or sporterized .308/30.06 Mauser (edit: Don't forget the plentiful VZ-24's and M48's out there, of any which is a FAR superior weapon to all but the best of the MN's- ie...Finnish rebuilds). The price isn't much higher but the difference is like a Model T VS a Mustang. There is a reason most modern rifles are NOT based on the Mosin. If you aren't stuck on a bolt gun, consider some of the inexpensive offerings in 7.62 combloc. The SKS or even AKM clones can be an acceptable poor man's 'ranch rifle'. The 12 gauge recommendations are also good - you can pick up a Maverick by Mossberg for $200 new. As far as handguns go, I am personally a big fan of Taurus. Despite the internet trolls I have had fantastic results w/ mine and they are priced very reasonably.- Best wishes!

The SKS is an excellent rifle. Semi-auto, decent capacity, durable, and mine is extremely accurate (some say otherwise but then again there are a lot of SKS out there).

bhh,

Sorry, but we don't do SHTF in S&T. This forum is for 'software' more than hardware, for working out ways of dealing with specific situations or circumstances rather than epic disaster movie scenarios.

There are specific fora in THR that cover rifles, shotguns and handguns, but I suggest you approach those areas from the standpoint of seeking inexpensive and reliable firearms rather than preparing for The End Of The World As We Know It.
