G30SF vs XD45C for HD

I would choose the one that felt better in my hand. For me, that was the XD. Sounds like the Glock is the one for you.

i owned an xd45--it was a disaster.

sold it for a glock 45, which didn't feel quite as comfy in the hand, but that takes a back seat to reliability and accuracy

I have two XD 45's...tough as nails, accurate, reliable, and just as ugly as a Glock.

I'm a 1911 guy, but for a polymer gun the XD is my choice.

Either one.

This one is a no brainer because I own a G30SF.

XD45 for me because shooting a Glock is a lot like grabbing a 2x4 with a pipe afixed to it.

XD45 but not the compact thats for CC its bad enough the .45 doesnt have enough bullets when u need it get the xd 45 tactical.

you know, i've held both a glock and a 2x4, and they feel nothing alike. not sure where this analogy originated.....

I bought the XD because it fit my hand better. It comes with one compact clip and two 13 round clips with grip extensions on them. I like the compact grip better.

But like it was said if the Glock fits you better then get that one. I think both are just as good a gun as the other.

Vote Glock, or maybe an FNH FNP 45, XD just has too high of bore axis, too many graphics and grooves to suite my taste. Grip safety on a striker fired pistol are for those that can't hold a Glock correctly. Whatever you choose get night sights. My personal choice is either a SIG P220 or my SIG P226, both with night sights.

Sigs and HKs are nice .45s but are a bit expensive. I am like you I like the XDs but the grip angle was weird for me seeing how I have been shooting glocks since is was 16 (25 now). The diameter of the grip was comfortable but I am not acustomed to the "1911" grip angle. Go with what fells comfortable sounds to me like it's the G30SF. That's also my next purchase (next weekend). I also want to buy the 10mm conversion barrel to keep my options open: .357 mag SP101, .45 acp, and 10mm.

Oh and you don't plan on ever carrying it I would seriously consider the 21SF. If nothing else buy some extra hi cap mags.

Just a self-invented colloquialism.

In all honesty, I do recognize the Glock as a reliable platform. When I was in the market for a 10+ round capacity 45 ACP, the Glock and the XD were the two platforms that made my short list. I found that, ergonomically, the XD suited me, and the Glock felt "blocky", like wrapping my hands around a 2x4.

That's where the analogy came from.

I like the XD for the ambi-mag release and the smoother trigger. I also like the way XDs fit my hand compared to most Glocks. However, I've never held an SF version of the 30.

In another twist, I still bought a Glock 36 over a XD 40SC just because I wanted the Glock more when I was comparing the two.

Soooooo, it all means . . .

BTW, the Gen 3 Glocks have a nub on the extractor that is the loaded chamber indicator AND when Glock triggers are forward the gun is cocked, sorta like a striker cocked indicator.

I own an XD45C and a G30SF

The XD45 with the 13 round mag, Tru Glo TFO, and Xtreme light is my night stand gun. I bought the G30SF, with night sights, earlier this week and will keep it in my truck full time. I am going to the range later today to put a couple hundred rounds through the G30 and will let you know how it goes. I also keep my constant pocket companion, a Khar PM9, with me at all times unless in a place where CCW is prohibited by law. I agree with the earlier poster both these guns are butt ugly, but they go bang every time you pull the trigger, and they are extremely reliable and tough.

I voted Glock, but both are fine guns. I own a XD and Glock.

None of the features that interest you in the XD will matter at night.

You won't be awakened in the middle of night by a sound and think "I'd better feel the back of my gun for the Striker Indicator, and feel the top of gun to see if a round is chambered."

You either keep a round chambered, or you don't.

Regardless, in the stress of a home defense situation you won't check any of those features, you will react.

All that being said. I have a Glock 19, and an XD 9 SC. I like them both. If the Glock feels better in your hand get it, if the XD feels better get it.

I keep the XD in my night stand because my wife can shoot it better, and if worse comes to worse she might need to use it.

Both are great guns. I have owned the Glock 30 and the XD 45 compact.

The XD45 has a slimmer grip and of course the back strap safety. I think some people tend to like the XD more than the glock because of the feel of the grip.

I really like the loaded chamber indicator on the XD, but that's just my personal preference. The reason is that while I keep a mag in the gun I do not store it with the chamber loaded. The loaded chamber indicator is a quick visual for me as I store the gun to double and tripple check that the chamber is clear.

I don't think it's even worth debating the reliability of one over the other. They are both solid. But for HD its purpose may be better served backing up a shotgun.

This is true.

If it still matters, both guns have the same features, they're just not advertised as hard on the Glock: When the Glock's trigger is forward it's cocked. When a round is chambered the extractor protrudes.

XD gets an extra point in my book for having the grip safety. I don't consider a safety on the front of the trigger a real safety.

But I still prefer Glock because it fits my hand better.

Get whichever one fits you the best and keep it consistent so you already know if it's empty, loaded, or chambered. You don't want to have to pay unnecessary attention to your gun when someone is in your house.

I agree with CTGunner in the idea that a handgun should be used as backup for a shotgun in a home defense situation. As for the XD vs Glock, I have never handled a glock 30, but I have held and shot a glock 19 and a 21 (9mm and .45) and I personally do not care for the Glocks. I never had a problem with either, and a friend of mine who owns these 2 guns has never had an issue with them either. So they can make a great defense gun, provided you can shoot it well. My mother has an XD in 9mm and I like it. It just fits my hand better. The safety features on the XD are no big deal to me, but that does not mean that they may not be a big deal for you. Not that it really matters, but my primary home defense gun is a Mossgerg 590A1 backed by a M&P 40 (Not that I have ever had to use either). My suggestion to you is to shoot both the Glock and the XD, and get the one that fits you (And your spouse if he/she will be using it) and be confident that the gun you chose will protect you in the unfortunate circumstance that a gun is needed in defense of your life. Both are great guns in my opinion. You may also want to consider a shotgun as a primary weapon. Keep us updated on the choice you made.

I agree that a shotgun would be a much better home defense weapon than either of these two pistols. That being said, I own two glocks (17 &22) and two xds (9mm tactical & 45 service). I owned a G21 as well, but sold it because the grip was so big that it was a detriment to my accuracy. I could hardly hold the thing. I f you are dead set on having a pistol, the XD45 will most likely fit you better. My question is why are you looking at compact pistols for home defense? A full size pistol is easier to use in a stressful situation. You have to work harder to be accurate with a compact design. I'm pretty sure your nightstand won't notice if you put a full size pistol in there instead of the compacts that you are looking at.

Of the two, I'd buy an XD45C. This is especially true if you intend on carrying. I think that this gun is one of the most flexible autoloaders. Full size to compact with a change of magazines. Pretty cool. More gun companies should do this. In general, XDs have excellent track records. Occasionally, you might hear of a lemon, but the same is true for Glocks, and ALL makes of autoloaders.

The XDm 45 is going to be released pretty soon. That might be pretty interesting, as well.

If you don't want to carry, I'd also consider a fullsized M&P 45. The M&P has a lower capacity, but it has superb ergonomics and a low bore axis. They also have superb sites. To me, 10 rounds of .45 acp is MORE than you'd ever probably need. An M&P compact might fit the bill as well, but I've never even handled one of those.

Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike Glock, I just happen to like XDs and M&Ps a little better.
