thinking about getting a new gun to replace

Either would be good, I went with the 27 since I was smitten by .40 at the time, and I'm very happy with the pistol, but if I were to do it again I would probably go with the 26 for ammo cost and also lower recoil is cool with me.

Which caliber do you prefer? 9mm or 40 SW? Otherwise, they're pretty much identical.

They're both unusually accurate, reliable, and have very good carry proportions, those stubby little two-finger grips are magical for concealment, and the barrel/slide is the perfect length, long enough for good ballistics, short enough to carry soooo easily.

Glock 27

I would sooner take a 36 than a 26 or 27. I don't know if you're ok with it being a .45, but it's concealable and way more comfortable for IWB, if that's how you intend to carry it.

In case you don't know, the 36 is Glock's one and only single stack model.

The Glock 26 and 27 are very blocky. They conceal about like an L shaped 2x4, and are far from pocket guns. With a +2 round extension they shoot OK, but with a 2 finger grip they want to jump out of one's hand.

You can get a Kahr CW9 (their economy version, same gun as the P9 with less finishing on the slide) for around $400 new, and it is a single stack making it much thinner than the Glock.

I suggest the 26, for less expensive practice ammo and lighter recoil. As an "all around" gun I still like the 19 better. The 26 is too blocky and square to be a pocket gun and is not substantially easier to carry belt holstered.

Just reading through your posts. My two bits: I've carried a number of concealed weapons over the years, including a Wather PPK 380, a S&W .38 snubnose 5 shot, and a S&W .357 magnum. I've used Glocks. I now carry a Springfiled XD45 Tactical and prefer it over all the above. Out of the box it out shoots every other handgun I ever owned.

The XD is narrower than the Glock and feels better in my hands. It seems to be more sturdy and has taken some abuse with no damage. It is a beautifully balanced weapon and seems to jump on-sight. If protecting yourself and others is your priority, then you might consider the XD45 has a 13 round magazine. With one in the chamber, perfectly safe in this weapon (dual safeties), you have 14 rounds that can be fired as fast as you pull the trigger... and as accurately as you are accurate.

I prefer the .45 ACP because of its well known knockdown power over a reasonably long distance (I saw a big, outraged man dropped at 75+ yards with one shot in the thorax). It is a THUMPER!

Concealability? The XD45 Tactical is a big gun. I carry it side ITW everywhere and have not known of anyone spotting it... even police officers with whom I associate. (I found a perfect form fitted leather ITW holster for it on eBay if anyone is interested - under $30). It is remarkably comfortable to carry.

In the end you need to go with what feels right to you, but keep in mind your objective. Cost, appearance, and other factors are secondary when you are looking to stay alive.

If the OP is considering the 9mm for the low cost of practice ammo, do you guys really think he's in a position to shell out for .45? C'mon.
.40 S&W is 'spensive anyway.

The glock 26 is a pretty sweet gun. I got to shoot one once and it felt oddly good, even though the grip was arguably thicker than what I usually like.
It has my vote. 8)

Of the two, get the 26. It's easier to control, especially rapid fire and holds one more round.

It's not difficult at all to carry IWB, nor is it uncomfortable. This does presume using a good holster, like the BraveHeart from www.kytac.com, but it's easily done.
