while you're searching...if you happen across a .22lr Diamondback, that IMO, would also be a suitable pistol to commemorate the event. i actually find the D-frame with Python-like barrel and top-strap sleeker looking than it's big brother

Congratulations!! You deserve and should buy the Colt Python. I love looking at all the beautiful revolvers that everyone has and are posting. Remember to show us yours when you get it.

Another vote for the Python. My first handgun is a 6" Royal Blue Python that my dad bought for me in 1979. I still have it and have added to it since. I also have several S&W's. While the S&W 27 is considered the best of the S&W line I would consider the 586 or 686 to be the comparable models. They are the same size as the Python and will fit many of the same holsters. If you want the Python for concealed carry I would choose a barrel length of 4" or less. The 6" can be concealed but it can be a challenge to do so effectively. I love my Python and now have 2 of them (a 6" and a 4") but for serious duty use I would use my S&W 686 on my police duty belt (if I were allowed to carry a revolver). Good luck and congratulations on the graduation.

While I used Colt revolvers in the bullseye CF stage for amny years i would not carry a Python. If you want to carry a revolver you should consider one of the S&W smaller J frames. An alternative would be a S&W K-framed 38 Special or a L-framed 357 Magnum/38Special. Personally I carry a Kahr PM-9 for daily service - slim, light, and 7 rounds of 9mm.

Thanks for all of the advice guys. I have decided that you guys are right on all counts. I won't be happy with anything less than a Python and I won't be happy unless I shoot it whenever I want. So I am on the lookout for a good value in a used but well kept Python. I can't wait! I have started looking at local shops and there is a gun show coming up on June 26 here in KC that I will be attending.

As for carrying the Python, I didn't mean necessarily open or concealed carry in public, more like holstering it at the range or at a friend's property where I shoot. But since this will be a user I decided to just not worry about what minor wear that might cause.

betes, congrats and I'm happy you will get the revolver that you really want.I've enjoyed reading your thread.Good luck in your quest.tom.

Get the revolver you really want and engrave the date and reason on it. That way, years down the road, you can look back on it with your grandchildren and so on and they can tell the story. I couldn't agree more he has worked hard to get where he is at so buy something special that you can pass on to your grandkids.
