I've got a chance to buy either a Remington 41 Targetmaster or a Remington 510 Targetmaster. Roughly same condition, Model 41 a bit cheaper.

What are the differences and which is a better. I'm looking for a general plinking around .22

Thanks

I have a 510. It's a Rem single shot bolt 22 right? No mag, just a loading tray to lay the round on.

I bought it about 35 yrs ago for next to nothing and just let it set all of these yrs as it was really rough. Last winter I had some time so I sanded all of the rust off, re-blued, then repaired and re-finished the stock. I wasn't expecting much as it's not a heavy bbl or heavy rifle. When I finally got around to shooting it, I found that it out shot ALL of my newer 22's, incl my Marlin 880 SQ which doesn't shoot too bad, BTW. I have never shot a more accurate 22 rifle in my life with factory iron sights. Someday I might scope it to see what it can really do.

Look for a shiny bore and good crown. These 5 "teen" Rem 22 rifles get very good reviews at rimfirecentral.com.

I have a 510. It was my grandfather's gun. It is a very accurate rifle. When we just want to stand around and plink, it is my go to gun. Thats when single shots shine!

I'd buy the 41 because it was only made for 4 years right before WWII and they're about the same anyway. The earlier one should be a few dollars more - like $25, assuming one isn't a smoothbore or has peep sights instead of a notched rear.
