I used to own a Mossberg 500 combo and really thought it was the bee's knees. I outfitted it exactly the way I wanted it, had a 28" (I think) vent-rib for clays (and potentially geese one day) and an 18.5" beaded barrel for HD. Then I got bit.

The bug that bit me was the bug for a semi-auto. I'd like to get one that I could still use for home defense, as well as maybe geese in the future. Here's what I would like:

1) 8+1 capacity minimum. More is better. I didn't like that the Mossberg was unable to get a mag extension like the Remington 870.

2) Gas operated. I hear this is more reliable.

3) Barrel around 20-24". I figure this will let me have that long mag, but still be short enough for in-home use, and if I want to reach out and touch some fowl, I can always screw in a choke to extend me a few inches, which leads to #4..

4) Replaceable chokes.

5) Not too much more than $1000.

6) As with any HD shotgun, as reliable as death and taxes.

My research has brought me to a Saiga 12, and an FN SLP Mk1. I thought about the Saiga, but decided I didn't want to deal with the conversion I know I would ultimately end up doing.

Have I found the right shotgun with the SLP? I know CDNN has them right now for $850, so that fits my budget. What do you High Roader's know about that I dont!

Thanks in advance.

P.S. The title comes from knowing it's stupid to try to hunt with a shotgun that has an 8+1 mag. The thing is that I want to be able to hunt should the need/desire arise, but it's not enough of a priority at this point to go and buy another separate shotgun that will end up just taking up space and eventually getting sold.

Check out the Mossberg 930, similar to the FN SLP but same reliable quality as the Mossberg 500.

Hmm.. The 930 looks like it could have an easily replaceable barrel, is that so? In that case, I could get the SPX version, a longer barrel as an option, and have a similar gun as an SLP, and lose about a pound of weight. I'd lose 1 mag capacity though...

Definitely something to think about. I have to admit I like the idea of the chokes more than the barrels, but I think I could get over that.

*researching barrel prices...

I'd go with a Benelli M2 Field with a 21" barrel, while not gas operated they are reliable as anything and are probably the best "all round" semiauto shotgun available.

Buy a standard hunting grade semi-auto and out fit it like you did your Mosberg. When hunting waterfowl ,by Fed regulation, your gun cannot be capeable of holding more than three rnds. Some states also have the same regulation for hunting all game in that state.

The m2 field looks nice, but it doesn't look like it will accept magazine extenders, and I really would like to hold at least 8 rounds. I can live with 7 but not less than that.

FLNT4EVR : I plan on using a plug when hunting, like I did with my 5+1 mossberg.

Why do you think that? There are plenty of magazine extenders available for the M2, I believe the 21" Field will accept a +5 extension {giving you 8+1, + another 1 if you mod the carrier and "ghost load"} that'll be even with the end of the barrel, a setup that's popular in 3 gun and other games.

While I'm pretty sure lots of guys run M2s with extensions, I'm positive they are available for the M1s.

That one hold 9 rounds (7+1+1) with an 18.5" barrel. I've got a 26" barrel, magazine cap, and plug if I want to use it for anything other than its current setup.

You should be able to find one south of $1,000, but, as mentioned, they aren't gas operated.

The FN you are looking at from CDNN is a great shotgun as well.

Another plus for a Benelli. Spare barrels are expensive, but with a 26" vent rib and a 21" rifle sight barrel, you've got a great all-around set-up. I can't see buying an M2 over an M1 unless you get a really good deal. FYI, my first shotgun and my go-to hunting shotgun is a Benelli M1. After 10 years of regular use, I have never had a single issue with it.
