Help with professor!

You know you drop at least half a grade (generally) writing against the professor, unless they get scared you will complain of their bias...

Well the professor wanted to debate so I guess that not debating would have resulted in a lesser grade. So at least I tried :) If I fail this class then I fail this class. I refuse not state my beliefs on a topic when asked. I will not lie just so I can pass. It's not a required class so if I fail it I can just take a different one. Thanks again guys.

Here's how to deal with your anti gun professor..

1. First, realize that you are in his terrain. He has the advantage. It's an unfair debate. He has probably done this a thousand times... Even if you win the debate...there may be repercussions.

2. If you must debate the guy, don't use LOGIC and FACTS to win your argument. Use an emotional appeal instead. Paint your argument using "word pictures" that touch the emotions. Help the class visualize a situation that would require the use of force. If you did your job properly...it is possible to paint such an emotional mental picture...that you can win the hearts and minds of those listening.

3. Finally, also have the option of winning the hearts and minds of your classmates outside class time. Talk to them before or after class about the "class debate" and perhaps take one of your classmates out to a shooting range. If you can convert just one classmate to our side.....YOU HAVE WON.

Use your frustration regarding your professor to fuel your motivation to win one more for our side.

It´s really quite simple.

An application of gun control that really works:
Airline travel. Not even in Guatemala are you going to be able to board a passenger jet carrying a firearm, period.

Why is airline travel gun control so effective?
Because airports have become extremely controlled environments. You cannot get through to a passenger jet without you and your belongings being thoroughly scanned. Total control of the environment is the ONLY way to make it effective.

Why is gun control in the outside world so ineffective, even as to have opposite the intended results?
Because the real world is not a controlled environment.

Those who argue for "effective" gun control are those who argue for an outside world as regulated and controlled as a passenger terminal. Something only the likes of Orwell could describe. Ask the prof if that´s what he wants for us all.

Where do people get this stuff?

Must be a lot of weak minded professors out there.

I've disagreed with lots of professors. And I've earned every grade I've ever received.

There are good professors out there. You know...not all are "eggheads". Some actually love their guns more so than their books.......but you would never know it.

In my honest opinion gun laws are only as good as locked car doors... they keep honest people honest. A gang isn't going to get rid of their weapons all of a sudden because a law was passed banning them.

John Lott is probably the most respected and quoted source for the info you are looking for. If he is worth his salt he should already know what he is asking you for. Grades are important, to a certain extent, but the truth will set you free. In twenty years the grade might not matter much. Cowering to someone whose ideology is more important than reality is a memory not worth a hypocritical grade, if that is indeed the case. Follow your conscience.

Alright yall I have scored a small win. He responded to my reply. He said that although he might not agree with everything I posted he can certainly appreciate my argument. He said he appreciated me being willing to argue with him over this because most students won't. Furthermore he added that even though he wasn't thoroughly convinced that he was amazed at the data I provided him and that he needed to educate himself more thoroughly. But hey what do you expect? He even went as far as telling me I did a great job and that I was a good man So here's to all of you for helping, Thanks.

CONGRATULATIONS! As another poster said, there may be hope for this prof yet. Even if he remains anti-gun, he may be a bit more open-minded in the future. Nicely done!:D

I'll second Silent Sam, in twenty years what really is going to matter.

You did a good job. Not all of your Prof's will be that level headed or that mature. When arguing, debating, stick to the facts, don't get emotional, and don't stray from the topic.

You may also be pleasantly surprised. Not all Prof's are anti-gun or anti-Second Amendment.

Call the NRA and ask them for somebody who knows and can quote sources that you need. It probably won't do you any good to work on this professor because most anti-gun people are closed minded and readily accept the lies of the Brady Bunch without question. Good luck though and don't let him get you down.

Arguing with a biased, left-wing, liberal anti is like trying to reason with a dumb, stupid ape; you're just going to get a handful of crap flung into your face.

You should write about something else that your professor would enjoy, such as there not being enough grass for the cows to eat or perhaps why the color pink is so very underappreciated.

I generally don't bring up my views on subjects that I think are going to be controversial because I'm worried about keeping my GPA high. By the time you're a college professor, anything I say isn't going to change your mind.
But in the course of outside discussions with a few of my professors, I have mentioned that I believe in being armed because I know history (and how unarmed people make excellent victims). Being history professors themselves, they tend to understand my point of view even if they themselves are not armed to the teeth.

"By the time you're a college professor, anything I say isn't going to change your mind."

I don't think that is true of all professors. I am a psychology professor, I carry off campus, and I would be comfortable with my students carrying as long as they have permits.

Professors who do not listen to another person's point of view are bad educators. I listen to what my students have to say even if they disagree with me. I sometimes come away with a different view on something.

And, by the way, if any of you are students and you think your grade was affected by your support of the 2nd amendment, report the professor to the Dean and tear them a new one on the course evaluation.

First, make sure you have a level playing field.

If he asks you to provide statistics that banning guns increase crime, ask him to provide statistics that banning guns lowers crime.

To give him the benefit of the doubt, he may already know that no study shows either position, and he's trying to teach you that letting the opponent in a debate pin you down on statistics is a losing position; the valid, corresponding tactic is to hold them to the same standard.

Debators often want to put you at a disadvantage: it's "obvious" that banning guns lowers crime, so if you think it lowers crime, you need statistics. In other words, let's assume my position is true, but you have to "prove" your position. And the standards of proof I will impose on you will be impossible to meet. So you lose before you start, if you let the opponent dictate the terms of the argument.

The goal of a debate is not to prove; it is to argue and persuade. You will have many arguments that banning guns is bad for individuals and society; you will have little proof.

As to the result: congratulations to you, and kudos to him.

Hey folks please take the high road and be careful not to paint all professors with such a broad brushstroke! As a college professor I can tell you that some of us "eggheads" love shooting just as much as you "cud chewing rednecks". ;)

Heck I bring in some of my targets when I teach students the concepts of accuracy and precision. I also share chrony data for my reloads when we talk about statistics. Some of my former students and colleagues are also my shooting buddies.

Professor and ccw

You will not sway the academic. lived and worked near PSU and of U of FLORIDA. Much interaction with academics. They are not of the real world by definition. They also, apart from a few engineering disciplines, unable to think in practical terms. I know this is a bad generalization but it has some truth to it. If I had to bet I would bet that very few Liberal Arts professors have a life history equating to the folks in the industrial/commercial/professional world. Consequently, they think as a group they are pretty narrowminded and do not venture outside of a very protected world.
