Ok, I had never seen you post that before. I knew you had gotten the Pro Operator.

That's only the 2nd railed Springfield 9mm I've ever seen. I would have thought you'd see more of them, but no one ever posts pics. So, I assume that they are pretty rare.

I have owned 9mm 1911's made by Kimber, Springfield, and Colt. By far, the best of the lot was/is the 5" Kimber Aegis. It's a sublime piece.

My pair of 9mm Kimber Custom II Stainless guns saw weekly range duty for years, and accumulated tens of thousands of rounds each without fail or flaw. My Springers all had extractor clocking issues, but that was readily recified by properly fitting a quality firing pin stop. My Colt was OK, but it was a Combat Commander and I don't cotton to sub-5" 1911s.

Anyone shooting 9mm in the 1911 platform needs to evaluate the Springfield/Leatham magazines. They are, IMO, a most intelligent 9mm 1911 magazine design.

i pretty much agree.
you have a 9mm, glock no less, g17 no less...

yea, the .45 guys have this covered. go to town. any choice that i saw, would be a good one.

btw..they aint cheap, but you reload, so nm...

yep, what they all said.

I have a few 1911s. I put a .22 conversion on a Springer Stainless. Great shooting.

I decided to get a 9mm 1911 a couple years ago. I was looking at the Springfield Kimbers and STIs. I didn't know there was a Dan Wesson.

I happened to call John at Proload to see how long it would take to get a Les Baer PII in 9mm. He had one on the counter. It's probably more than you want to spend, but a very fine gun. I use Wilson 10 round mags with no troubles. I shoot reloads exclusively.

I think the STI or RIA would be a good choice for a budget gun.

I like my RIA

Here are a couple of pics. I Duracoated it with matte black on the slide and controls and Magpul flat dark earth on the frame. The grips are from Raasco.

IF you want to stay with 9x19, then I would guide you to look at a Browning High Power (another John Browning gun), or a CZ SP-01. Both were designed for 9x19 and have the safety of an exposed hammer. Either can be had for $450-$600 range.
In my neck of the woods, new Browning Hi-Power's are selling in the $800-$1000 range.

People in this thread are saying 9mm doesnt work in 1911s....

I have 4K rounds thru my 9mm STI Sentry in the last few months, 100% flawlessly no issues whatsoever. It hasnt jammed once. Even last weekend in a sub zero IDPA match. Not a bobble.

STI gun, Tripp Research mags, full of win.

By this time next year, I will have paid for the gun with the savings in ammo.

+5000rounds through my Loaded w/o probs in the 2 years i've owned it.

+2000rounds through my EMP and only had an issue with the extractor tension in the first 50 rounds.
I adjusted it while at the range and it's been trouble free for 2 years.

1000rounds through my Guardian w/o any problems in the 3 months of ownership.

yep, 9mm 1911's just don't work.

THIS IS WHAT A QUALITY 9MM WILL SHOOT AT 50YDS FROM A RANSOM REST. LEFT HAND GROUP 10RDS , RIGHT HAND GROUP 24RDS.

1ST: CHOICE. THE GUN IS A 6" 9MM BUILT BY ROCK RIVER ARMS. THESE ARE THE
BEST IF YOU CAN FIND ONE.
2ND SPRINGFIELD ARMORY
3RD S&W 1911 IN 9MM

another vote for a BHP. get the best used your budget can handle. or a new one.

a 1911 in 9mm is liken to surrounding a V8 with a VW Bug
though an EMP is a nice item if your (or your spouses) hands fit it
and your budget can support it

I recently purchased the Springfield Loaded in 9mm. After much debate I picked it over the Kimber based on lots of reviews and reading. There are many camps and opinions. The thing I think I noticed most is that folks really get their Irish up when discussing 1911s.

Anyhow, I have been very pleased with the purchase in every way. It is very well put together and has been completely reliable (admittedly I only have 1,000 rounds through it), and exceptionally accurate. Nice trigger, well fitted, nice gun.

Have fun deciding.

I've been able to put about a hundred rounds each through a pair of 9mm STI 1911's. One being a Trojan and the other a Ranger II. When shot back to back I prefer the balance of the commander length of the Ranger II. But when not handled back to back the subtle difference in balance is pretty insignificant.

I've also helped a lot of new shooters put rounds through both guns by working part time as an RO at the local rental range. There's a noticable improvement in a lot of shooters when they shoot the 1911 in 9mm over the other gun styles. Especially those with smaller hands and that are recoil sensitive due to being new to the game.

I don't have one yet but one day soon there WILL be a 9mm 1911 in my safe. Likely a commander length and probably one in stainless with a bead blasted with polished flat areas combination finish.

I would recommend either the Dan Wesson PM-9 or STI Trojan. I had a Springfield 1911 9mm Target which was very reliable but would not group better than 4+ inches at 50 ft. after 2 trips to the factory. In contrast the DW PM-9 will shoot 1 inch groups at that distance.

Just a follow-up thought or two.

I have a very nice BHP with a custom trigger job and a Bar-Sto barrel. The trigger is nowhere near the 1911, and not as accurate as the Les Baer even with the Bar-Sto. I like the gun, and shoot it often, but it isn't a 1911. I have a S&W 952 and a CZ 75. Both excellent guns. Not as good of a trigger. As my smith said, all the other guns have more parts and levers to move, they cannot be made to feel like a 1911.

For super accuracy, the 9mm just isn't as accurate a bullet in my opinion, and in my guns. It is easier to shoot fast, so the 9mm is my speed steel competition gun. Plenty accurate for a 10" plate at 30 yards.

I had a little extractor issue with mine when new, but the local smith diagnosed and fixed it in a few minutes. Thousands of trouble free rounds down range since then.

More of the high end guys are getting into the act as well. Ed Brown has a 9mm 1911 now and I think Wilson has had one for a while. Baer has been building the 9mm PII for a few years. Dan Wesson and Fusion have made 9mm 1911s. S&W has one out in their Pro line http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/...57775_757751_757751_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y

I haven't seen too many "I hate my 9mm 1911 so much" threads either.

rellascout has valid points, but I don't agree on one of them.

The 1911-style trigger does have the short reset better for faster shooting; but it also has a trigger that's easy to improve or have improved. The short, light, crisp break will bring out the best "accuracy" of the "shooter".

IMHO The 1911 gun and trigger is not necessarily more accurate, but it is 'easier' to shoot more 'accurately'.

I have 2 1911's in 9mm. Both Dan Wesson's.

A Pointman 9 and a guardian. They are both fantastic. the Guardian is available right now and the PM-9 will be in production for 2011. They did not make any in 2010.

If you can find either you will not be disapointed. My PM-9 is my favorite range pistol.

I would like to have an STI Spartan or Trojan but my 9mm 1911 plate is pretty full now.
This is my PM-9 on the bottom with my PM-7

I have 2 1911 9mm pistols, one is an old Colt Series 70, it shoot OK. The other is an STI Trojan it is amazing, the best shooting 9mm I have ever shot. You can get an STI Spartan 9mm from http://dawsonprecision.com for $628.96. For the money STI 1911s are equal or better than anything made, mine has been flawless since I got it, STIs run right from the box, and customer service is as good as it gets.

I have 1911's in 9mm, .45ACP, and .38 Super. The 9mms are a S&W 1911 Pro Series and a Fusion CCO. I carry and shoot these guns more than any of my others, in fact I chose the S&W for duty carry. It is 100% reliable, regardless of ammo, very accurate, and very fast shooting. The Fusion had some teething problems but after a trips back to the factory to have a ramped barrel installed it runs perfect and is more accurate than my S&W. I use Wilson ETM and Metalform mags in the S&W and just Metalform mags in the Fusion.

Both of these examples are kind of pricey, if I were looking to pick up a reasonably priced 9mm 1911 for plinking and range work I'd have to go along with the RIA fans. I had one of their GI .38 Supers and it was a very nice gun. Good shooter, no running issues, and plenty accurate. The 9mm Tactical is a whole lot of gun for the money and would be well worth a look.
