I didn't do it with my pistols, but I have kept an ammo log for my Thompson Center R55 rifle. I bought the rifle in 2007 and I use it about twice a month, often with new shooters.
I use Excel, it is useful to automatically generate a total:

I guess if I ever sell the rifle then the new owner might find that useful, especially if I colour-code the cells according to what ammo I find has been reliable and what ammo has grouped the best for me.

Anybody else do this, or have another reason to log ammo usage?

i dont keep a log specifically for ammo....but for every thing that happens to my gun....

....i record what i shot and how much, when i clean my gun, any modifications made to the gun, as well as any miscellaneous notes on performance or weather.....

i figure that way if my gun starts acting up one day, i will be able to see what is different or out of place.....

No, I don't even inventory my ammunition cache, and frequently don't even know how many guns I own let alone when I bought them unless I look at my records.

I keep a an ammo log for my Berettas, but don't keep one for my son's .22 and my Mossberg 500. Those guns are cheap enough to throw away. The Berettas will be handed down to my kids.

I've noticed that when people sell guns on internet forums, they all seem to have "less than 500" rounds through it. I've always rolled my eyes at that one.

I can tell you that one of my Berettas has exactly 2025 shells through it. My other Beretta has exactly 1250 shells through it. When I'm done shooting a round of skeet, I make a tickmark on a piece of paper or note it in my phone. When I get home, I update the round count.

A gun is a machine. All machines need preventive maintenance after a certain number of iterations of use. The springs in a Beretta 391 should be replaced after 5000 rounds or so. The best way of knowing when that number is approaching is to have a good count. So I count my rounds. Most of those rounds are the Remmington Gun Club loads, so I don't note differences in ammunition, but maybe I will start doing that...

Yes, I just started this year. I'd been thinking, being in law enforcement it'd be a good idea to log how many rounds I've had down range through various firearms should my training and experience come into question in court (should I ever have to shoot someone). Not a bad idea either for self/home defense situations as well.

Yes I keep one also but not in a spreadsheet ... normal notepad and pen does the job for me.

Yes, but I use a journal instead. It stays in my range bag or backpack so that I can write it all down while it's fresh in my mind.

It's mostly for load data, but I use it for factory ammo as well. For handguns is nearly always used solely for load data. It comes handy with rifles. With factory ammo I use it for bullet weights and types, weather condition, grouping, and cold bore. For hand loads is that plus the load data.

I could use it to see what I have shot, but that isn't my purpose for keeping it. I record some maintenance, especially if I change something. I don't necessarily log cleaning, I just clean them after shooting with the exception of "fouling the barrel."

I used to do that with handloads religiously, keeping track of how each load shot and how many times the cases were reloaded etc. While my reloading bench is currently in boxes I still have record books and boxes marked 'once fired' "Savage only" etc.

I keep a gun / magazine / ammo inventory info stored in an Excel spreadsheet. I don't monitor the number of rounds sent downrange per gun, its not a bad idea, just a little tough because I'm a social shooter.

I don't mind making a blank template of that spreadsheet if anyone wants: all you'll have to do is enter the ammo name and subtotal.
Send me a PM if you want it.

Considering I've had some of my guns forty plus years...it's a bit late for me to start...maybe. :D

I like the idea of logging the gun use/cleaning/mods for specific guns. Probably should start that.
