What kind of screwy crown is this?

Winchester model 270 .22lr pump action. Shoots great. I was cleaning it and noticed the crown. There are 6 points around the muzzle that I don't know what the point of them are. The picture below really just looks like a badly mangled crown because my camera sucks, but it is just 6 points spaced out equidistantly around the bore with no damage. I've never seen a crown like that. Is it a factory screw up or was that intentional?

It shoots just fine and I have no intention on doing anything about it even if it is somehow a goof.

Thanks!

Check to see if they're just carbon build up.
If so, it'll scratch right off with a piece of brass.

If not, it could be just a left over of the machining process that didn't get removed completely.

It actually a great question. I am confident that many other folks have wondered the same, but didn't ask. THR is a great place to learn.

Thanks for the thread. :)

My Ruger 10/22's crown looks similar, and it still shoots as accurately as when I bought it.

I also thought it was a nasty crown job but then when I thought about the tens of thousands of rounds I've shot that went where I wanted them to go, I decided to leave it alone.
