All the recent shootings lately have got me thinking how defenseless I am when on Campus. My state is Ohio, and firearms/knives are definitely out because it would be a serious felony to possess those on campus.

Does anyone know if it would be legal to carry something along the lines of an air tazer? I know it doesn't even begin to match a crazed psycho with 2 uzis but it sure beats pepper spray.

All of the class rooms I am in are on the 3rd floor and have non-openable windows and the only exit is the door, which is a long hallway with no cover of any kind.

I'd be surprised if it were allowed, but I suppose it might be possible. Have you asked your campus PD (police department) about it?

What is the campus plan for classroom defense/active shooter situations- do they have a plan in place? If there is a plan, is it observed in practice by the faculty?

Way back when I was in school - they disallowed just about everything. So I started carrying a large mag-lite. I took some training in using a baton from a LEO friend on a regular basis and figured it was better than nothing. Not a lot better if the BG has a gun, but I was severely limited on options.

Wait you really can't carry a knife, even a pocket knife or a multi-tool? Hell I thought that TX knife laws were bad but to answer your question if its legal carry a Kubotan and get some training with it. Personally I carry a 30.06 bullet (decommissioned obviously) attached to my key chain and if anyone sneaks up on me while I am trying to unlock my door I have a very effective weapon and if anyone asks it is just a key chain.

I feel for you, I am also a collage student and because I live off campus (no car) so I have to walk through a very dangerous neighborhood in order to get home.

Hmmm. Sticky spot for you. I would check very carefully into whether or not you're allowed to carry a Tazer. Don't ask your campus safety officers, because I can pretty much guarantee you the answer is "no", even if they have no idea what you're talking about.

I would suggest writing a letter to the Attorney General in your state, and finding out from them. If they say it's ok, then conceal it, and never speak of it on campus. Just because it's legal doesn't mean you can't get expelled for it.

Also, don't discount pepper spray. I agree with you, it's not my first pick either. But, if you can legally have it and you won't be worried about bringing it along, then get the hottest, nastiest stuff you can find.

Makes me glad to live in Florida. With a Florida CCW permit, tazers are specifically allowed on university campuses, so long as they're concealed. I don't carry a tazer to class, but I do have a pocket knife on me every single day. (also allowed) Once in a while, I also tote some pepper spray, but not too often.

Stay safe, dude.

Check out the several pepper sprays by Kimber. It's on their web site and there are several YouTube videos. The stuff comes out as a jell that adheres to your opponent and fires further than you'd think.

I agree with rfwobbly, I'm a college student as well, so I can't carry my CZ, and tazers aren't allowed.

Instead I keep a Kimber Pepper Blaster II on me, in addition to my knife and flashlight. Its basically a two shot OC derringer in that it uses percussion caps to force the OC out. It has a range of about 15 feet, with the OC travelling at 90mph, with a spread of I believe 12 inches in diameter at 4 feet (don't quote me on that). It isn't ideal, but it beats other options.

I don't think its a felony. But, you would get in deep trouble, and for sure would be expelled. I geuss it all depends on you state laws. And Ohio is way too restrictive on CCW! I skimmed http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/ohio.pdf as a guide, and I've decided to never go to Ohio. Sorry, I too wish we could lawfully carry on campus. If there's an actve shooter at my school, we're toast.

Comparision between our states:

I know that in Mn, you can't lawfully carry at my college without serious penalty from the school. If you do not leave when requested, its a petty misdemeanor. But, in the state laws, they cannot stop you from lawful carry while in a "parking area, or parking facility." But it seems that even in Ohio, thats not allowed. Its time for change over there.

MN Laws on School carry:

624.714 Subd. 18.
Employers; Public Colleges and Universities.
(a) An employer, whether public or private, may establish policies that restrict the carry or possession of firearms by its employees while acting in the course and scope of employment. Employment related civil sanctions may be invoked for a violation.

(b) A public postsecondary institution regulated under chapter 136F or 137 may establish policies that restrict the carry or possession of firearms by its students while on the institution's property. Academic sanctions may be invoked for a violation.

(c) Notwithstanding paragraphs (a) and (b), an employer or a postsecondary institution may not prohibit the lawful carry or possession of firearms in a parking facility or parking area.
