Do I Really Need a 7-08

CLARK; what is the meaning of the yardage on your list?

I take the muzzle velocity of a cartridge and use Quickload/Quicktarget to calculate how far that bullet would have to travel to slow down to the muzzle velocity of a lesser cartridge.

The 7mm-08 is 198 yards as it takes for the 162 gr plastic tip boat tail bullet to slow down from the 3158 fps of a 7mmSTW to the 2789 fps of the 7mm-08 muzzle velocity.

I like to play that game to show that the 22-250 has little over the 223 and the 17HMR has little over the 17M2.

Where's your big gun for dangerous, or large North American game? Sounds like a good excuse to get yourself a .338 WinMag. :D

Yes but the beauty of any larger cased round is with the heavier for caliber bullets. A 22-250 will shove a 70 gr. Speer out the muzzle at about 3300=3400 FPS as compared with a 223 at about 2800-3000. That does make some difference. I have both calibers and have different uses for each.
As for the 7mm-08 compared with say a .270-.280 the differences with the lighter bullets such as 130-140 gr. is almost nil. But stick a 150 grain in there and they both pull away for the 7-08. However, what is the 7-08 really suited for? IMHO, it shines best on deer and hogs, or maybe on Elk at closer ranges. For this all three are practically equal. Myself, I prefer the .270 Win., although I do have both the .270 Win. and the .280 Rem. Both are great as is the 7-08.

Did I really need a 7mm-08. Not really as I already had a 308, 30-06,243 and a 223 but I bought one because I wanted one and for no other reason.
Yep, I'm a member of the "don't really need but want" ownership fraternity.
