Sorry for the dumb question but is it legal in competitive pistol shooting to shoot 9mm through a conversion barrel in a pistol that was originally chambered in .40?

It will depend on the sport; in IDPA it is legal in ESP division, but not SSP I believe. So if you have a gun with said conversion you would shoot in ESP.

Not a dumb question at all.

USPSA will not allow you to shoot a gun like that in Production Division, but I believe it would be acceptable for Limited or Limited 10. However, scoring would fall under the rules for Minor Power Factor, which would be a disadvantage, as most people in Limited division are shooting .40 pistols that make Major.

For most 3 Gun matches, there are no rules governing power factors, and most people run 9mm pistols.

Ugh, in re-reading that, I realize it probably doesn't make any sense whatsoever to anyone not already familiar with the game...

I gathered this much. Not legal in production, possibly in Limited, and also kosher for 3-gun.

I don't think this is correct, as long as the same pistol is available in that calibers.

From the excluded modifications list under SSP in the Rule Book:
6. A barrel of another caliber that is not offered in the original
factory model.

So, an M&P .40 with a conversion to 9mm should be legal in SSP.

I think. If someone knows for absolute certain, please let me know. I have one shooter who does this all the time, and I've always let him run in SSP.

If this isn't true, I'll get to bump him into ESP and he'll have to try to beat my xDM.

Sam, you may be right depending on the gun; I may be at a disadvantage here since I shoot Glocks and that is what I've paid attention to "rule clarifications" on most often.

I'm near certain I've read the question, "can I shoot a G22 in SSP with a 9mm conversion barrel", and the official answer was no since the G22 is not offered in 9mm from the factory (of course, the G17 is "identical" for most intents and purposes, other than caliber). However, guns with no change to the model name between calibers, and no caliber markings anywhere but the barrel (such as, say, a Sig 226), may be a different story. I don't know for sure, thanks for mentioning that.

Agree with ny32182.
Glock caliber conversions are not legit in IDPA SSP (opinions vary on ESP) because the models are caliber specific and there is no such thing as a stock Glock 22 9mm. But there are both 9mm and .40 P226s, so conversions are presumably allowable.
Not that anybody is going to care what a beginner shoots; but when you get classified and go to a sanctioned match, it will matter.

IPSC/USPSA Production is if anything more limiting than IDPA.
I think GSSF is strict on stock configuration, too.

IDPA came out today with an official position on caliber conversions. Robert Ray says:

"A member may replace a barrel of one caliber for one of a different caliber as long as the gun remains safe and functional. This will be legal for all gun models, however if the gun is not in the original factory shipped caliber it will not be legal for SSP division.

Example: A member may replace a Glock 35 barrel (.40 caliber) with a 9mm barrel. This gun would be legal for ESP but not SSP."

So even that P226 in the Internet Tradition of buying big and shooting small would be moved to ESP with a caliber conversion.
