Here are some older pictures of my custom Bowie when I was in Iraq. I carried this blade on a few missions there, I have it here in Afghanistan now though I have yet to carry it here.
I have a prototype sheath with a Model 4 knife from Ek Commando Knife Company. They want me to test it out here in Afghanistan. I will use it for awhile and give them my report.
I carry it most of the time, but sometimes I will carry something else.
The LaGana VTAC tomahawk does not get used. I was a pure impulse buy and I find it useless. When I go home from this deployment, the tomahawk will be traded off at a gunshow.
Nice collection, but I noticed several without any guard... From your experience, would that be a good thing, bad thing, or are you pretty much indifferent?
I am just weird about needing SOME type of guard, so that's why I ask...
+1 for a nice blade collection, George - but out of curiosity, why in the world don't you just attach your pouches to your IOTV? That FLC vest is a pain when worn over the armor!

Study John Ek's design philosophy and early history and you'll find he didn't think guards were needed even when stabbing. Plenty of troops carried his knives in WWII and Korea didn't worry about his knives slipping. Of course back then he used hard maple for his handle material.
Thanks for your service brother. Just came home from the sandbox myself (again).
Nice blades. I carried a stout blade on my IBA also - I chose a mass produced Gerber.
As for the hatchet, I understand that folks in that part of the world are terrified of ax-type weapons because they are used to de-hand folks for theft-style crimes.
