So. I've already got a Stoeger Uplander on layaway. It's almost paid off and I was in to put most of the remainder down on it. Unfortunately as I stood at the counter waiting, I looked down and saw an old Colt double action sitting there. I glanced at the tag - Colt .357 Magnum. $299. :what:

The bluing is fairly heavily worn (maybe 60-70% left? I'm not good at telling that) and there are Pachmayr grips in place of whatever Colt shipped. But it locks up tight & times right, the barrel is good and the trigger is oh so typically Colt 2 stage  It's actually got "Colt .357 Magnum" on the barrel. IIRC that was the model prior to the Trooper? I once had a Trooper MkIII and this is reminiscent of it. SN is 15xxx.

To make a long story short, I still own the same amount on that Stoeger but also have a Colt on layaway. It'll be a nice piece to carry while hunting. I think I did alright.

Looks like you're getting yourself an excellent shooter Colt. The Trooper or the 357 Magnum is a great revolver which gets little respect. Collectors know about them though.

Been reading up on this baby. Looks like it's more a "Pre-Python" than a "Pre-Trooper" as the Trooper was the cheaper .38 special version at that time. The serial puts it in 1958.

Yeah, this will be a nice one to have along this fall in the deer woods of Northern Wisconsin. :D

I had a Colt "357" revolver many years ago. I believe it was introduced before the Python. It was a Colt Officers Model on steroids with it's 357 magnum caliber. As I remember it was quite accurate and was quite rapidly replaced in the Colt catalog by the Trooper in cal 357 Mag. I was told that this was due to a copywright suit by S&W claiming it infringed on S&W's 357 MAGNUM.

Colt manufactured it to be their premium 357 Magnum revolver when it was introduced. Then Colt was sold and the new owners wanted the Python produced as possibly THE premium 357 mag revolver. I feel sure the blue prints and pre-production revolvers were already at Colt. They didn't make a mistake. I believe they dropped the 357 model and combined the caliber with the Trooper offering when Colt dropped the 22 version of the Trooper in 1962. Production of the Trooper continued until 1968 when the Trooper Mark III was introduced.
