I recently picked up a no4 sporter with matching bolt, it shoots well but I have trouble chambering a cartridge from the magazine which could be a real nuisance when you need that quick second shot.

Looking at the magazine I wondered if the "ears" could be bent down too far. Before I started meddling with it I thought I'd ask if anyone else had encountered similar problems and what they'ed done to fix it.

Glad you got it...

Krankie 1--and I'm sure you'll get the feeding problem worked out. BUT...

here you go 303tom

5 minutes with a pair of pliers, a little swearing under my breath and it now feeds all bar the last one cleanly. The front of the last cartridge kicks up as you start to push it forward causing the back to drop just enough for the bolt to slide over the top and push the cartridge back down into the magazine. I can probably live with that for a while after all if If I cant hit it with the first 9 shots I've got a problem. But if anyone has a sugestion I'm all ears

Nice!

Krankie-1--Nice rifle! Looks like you could return it to military configuration if you so desire. OTOH, it'll do as a sporter, as is.

Now, the next (and most important) question: How's she shoot??

Does the magazine lock in properly? The enfields I've owned have had very secure magazine lock-up. I'd say if you've got much play then maybe the magazine isn't original to the gun (not sure if they're serial numbered, but I think they are supposed to be individually mated to the rifle) and that could be the problem. I've heard of this causing feeding and ejection problems especially on the 7.62x51 Ishapore Enfields. Will it feed correctly if you put a little upward pressure on the magazine as you work the action?

If it's not locking in properly, I've heard of people taking the magazine and adding a touch of weld to the tab where the catch engages it, then cutting a "new" tab out to make it lock in correctly.

krankieone, THAT can be restored to full military glory if you want. Springfield Sporters can probably hook you up with the wood. Nice find!

The magazine does lock in securely .

For the moment I'll add a no drill type scope mount I think I should be able to make one that mounts of the rear peep sight mounts, the ejector screw &" clamps " onto the front of the RH stripper clip mount.I would prefer not to make any changes that can't be reversed so I have the option of restoring it to military spec in the future.

I plan to use it for pest animal control around the farm and for occasional Sambar(deer) hunting trips with my son.

I'll check out Springfield Sporters I'm not sure how I'd go importing gun parts down under we have some pretty weird gun laws here.

There are a lot of parts "Down Under". Go to gunboards.com and page down to the Enfield Forum. There is one moderated there by some great paople from Australia.

picked up a Arctic Fox scope mount today when I took my son to get a .22 just got to get a scope now

"...they were bent for full metal jacket ammo and hunting rounds will need to be adjusted..." Nonsense. Mag lips have nothing whatever to do with the bullet used. Strictly whether or not the cartridge will come out.
"...especially on the 7.62x51 Ishapore Enfields..." They use a different mag.

This means the lips forward of the shoulder are a little too open. Try bending them in just a smidgen.

My Fazakerley No 4 Mk 1 when fully loaded with soft point ammo will have a hard time loading the topmost cartridge. But the rest are a breeze. I guess if they are all FMJs, they wouldnt be a problem as designed for fast shooting.
