I have sort of lucked into helping on a bighorn hunt. I have about $400 max to chip in for a spotting scope and am looking for a 20x60-60 minimum with good clear glass. Looking for advice on new, used, sale whatever. The nephew with the bighorn tag does not have the spare funds and is talking about taking his range spotter. Any and all advice appreciated.

I'm looking for a spotting scope in that price range too. I have been looking at the Nikon Prostaff line but have not pulled the trigger on one yet. I have alot of Nikon rifle scopes and love them so their spotting scope has to be as clear.....right?

20-60x is pushing it a little bit for a field scope when you're moving around on foot a lot. Most people who do a lot of movement on foot when hunting opt for a good set of binoculars, and then a compact spotting scope in the 30x-45x range for the top end. If you want a scope that goes up to 60x, you should be getting an objective diameter in the 80mm range. 60mm is a bit too small for that magnification, and you will have issues with insufficient light transmission at the higher magnification. In all but bright daylight, your higher magnifications will be useless.

If you want to save money but get a good scope, check out SampleList and buy used.

take a look at the Vortex Optics spotting scopes, they have good glass on them and they have a life time no fault warranty on them that is transferable so you can buy a used one and still don't have to worry if you break it. I have seen some really good ones in your price range on ebay. I have the 20x60x60 myself and really like it, they also have some good binos that would work great for you.

I recently purchased a Celestron Regal 100. I think the 65mm regal in that line is in your price range. I'm mostly using my scope to watch ships on the river a couple miles away and some astronomy so far. I haven't gotten it out in the field yet, but have tested it as thoroughly as I can from up on my hill. Two points really stand out as I'm using the scope, it takes a really sturdy(heavy and/or expensive) tripod to stabilize it enough to make out moderate detail, and it doesn't take much mirage to make the upper end of that magnification(Regal 100 is 22-66X) pretty useless.

You might want to consider a good tripod in that budget if you don't already have one. My scope didn't come with one but from the reviews I read even the better scopes come with essentially worthless tripods. For 400 I think I would look at an Alpen 788 Scope and the sturdiest tripod I could find with the remainder.
