Hello, I have every thing I need to build a remington 700, except for the barrel???
The receiver is a long action. The thing is I don't want to build a common caliber such as a .270, or a 30/06...

If I am going to take the time and money to build one, I should do a caliber, That I cant get every day.... one caliber I have considered is .416 rem mag....what do you think of this caliber??? do you know were I can get a barrel?? what other calibers would you consider???

like I said if I am going build one. I don't want to make one That you can get every day....what calibers would you suggest? The reicerver is a long action, and The bolt has a mag face,

Thanks

.416 Taylor is an awesome wildcat(.458 Win necked down to .416 Caliber) have had a couple of these( .416 Taylor Mag), great for elk, moose and big bears

inexpensive brass and dies and components

but then, what would you require a .416 Mag for ?

and my 350 grn NP hand-loads pretty much mimic the .308 Win with 180 grn bullets for downrange trajectory , so the .416 Taylor is defiantly workable to 300 plus yards without a huge hold-over!,

but over 5000 lbs of muzzle energy!

Do you intend to shoot the new rifle alot? Spend the money to build and not shoot it. My .458 mod. 70 does not get shot much. Cost to shoot and how much you will shoot it should enter into your your thoughts. I too using a common caliber as it has been done to it. What has a 30-06 not done? No room to explore new anything. It sounds like you lean towards this idea in part. Look at making a 6.5-06. This is a .264 head on 30-06 case. You may of heard of the 6.5x55 swede or 6.5 creedmore or .260 rem. same head only more of everything. Great bullet B.C. &SD both. Have fun and bangaway.

The thing is I collect Remington 700's....right now I have seven model 700's, and a few winchesters, and rugers...

I have alot of the common calibers, and I would like to make one that I can't always find so easy. I probably would not shoot it too much, and I may not even hunt with it at all. right now I hunt with my 30/06, and 300 win mag, and these calibers will do anything you want them to do, especially the 30/06 youi cant beet it.

So basically I would like it for more of a collectors piece to add to my collection.

Perhaps it may be better to just sell all of the parts that I have, and put that money towards one... But from The prices that I see on the internet, for the calibers such as 416 rem mag, it seems like most are over $1200, even used

so Do you think it would be cheaper for me to have one built, since the only part That I lack is the barrel?? or would you just sell the parts, and buy one....There are still a few common calibers, that I don't have in my collection that I could pick up for about $500. so I may just sell my parts and go the route...

Dose anyone know were I could get a good Barrel to build somthing out of the ordinary?? I will probably just build what ever caliber, that I can find a good barrel for....That is as long as as long as it is not so common that I could buy one cheaper than I can build one for.

You could go for 8mm Mauser. Not that common anymore for new builds, but it's an excellent round and ammo is still widely available in soft points. It sits about 33% above .30-06 in power ratings. Barrels in it also aren't that hard to come by.

The factory can build a collector's piece. It's a lot harder for you to do it.

What cartridge was the receiver originally built for?

I've only shot a .416 Rem. a few rounds on one occasion and have no interest in doing it again.
The gun was a notably hard kicker. I guess if you just wanted one to say you had an odd caliber or if you were going on a real African safari (as the owner was) it would be ok, but I wouldn't be interested.

How about a nice .264 Win Mag? Completely overshadowed by the 7mm R.M., it is still a hot round if you give it a long barrel and load it right.

But if you are talking about what you can build versus what you can buy for $500, there isn't much.

And will YOU be doing the building or hiring it done? If you will be paying a gunsmith, I would say there is no way to get there from here while worrying about price, certainly not with a number like $500 in your head to start with.

Friend has a 416 Remington - that is what he takes to Africa for big/dangerous game - he shoots it as little as possible as it tends to hurt on both ends - if you just want a big bore, go for it, but if you to shoot it a lot, you might want to look for something a little less punishing

It is hard to narrow down a caliber without a specific need. With a magnum bolt face I would second Mr. Watson's suggestion. A 264 Win Mag with 26" barrel would be a great place to start.

Another option would be .338 Lapua Magnum.

375 H&H might also be a good choice. It is a good round and responds well to hand loading with variety of good loads.
