I'm interested in knowing how many people who used to mistrust autos (favoring revolvers) for their purported reliability issues have gained confidence over time and switched from revolver to auto because of the advances in reliability.

I have always trusted automatics enough to carry one. However, I prefer to defend myself with a revolver and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. I intend to buy a nice 9mm for range and HD use but my carry weapon will remain a J/K/L frame revolver.

I was born in '82, so by the time I was old enough to own handguns, autoloaders dominated the scene already.

However, my first handgun was a Security-Six, and one of my primary carries today is a Charter Bulldog .44 Spl.

I trust autoloaders, but I've only owned three that have never jammed (S&W 4506, S&W 4516-1, S&W 5906). All the rest (dozens), Glocks & HK's included, have suffered failures at some point. Usually ammo-induced, but stoppages nonetheless.

Incidentally, the forcing cone on my Security-Six did crack and bound the gun up tight, but that is the only failure I've ever experienced with a quality revolver. None of the many S&W revolvers I have/had ever stopped working.

In short, I carry both revolvers and autoloaders, but have slightly more faith in a wheelgun when the chips are down.

Spirit of '76!

Used to be nearly exclusively revolvers... Have a Hi-standard (not point) .22 in the family (with it's matching, mated rifle, pistol is a colt woodsman clone)

Until buying my M&P last year, the Hi-standard was the only semi pistol I cared for. I broke from my mold because I just didn't want to subject an older Model 10 .38 or my Schofield replica to being Peed on by the baby, or constant sweat exposure.

I've opened myself to buying more semi's, though not likely many more polymers... I just like metal.

Revolvers will still come first in priority though if all other desires are equal. I have my one "abuse it and be happy " pistol for CCW.

You do realize that only someone who was old enough to own a handgun in 1980 could vote your first option. This significantly is going skew your poll.

I think being well exposed from age 5 (1981 and my first shots with the marlin 101) to 14 ( and shooting a 1940's model 10 as much as my .22 ar-7) is close enough to actually OWNING one for those of us just a hair too young to have put money down at the store for one legally.

:D Can add it to the list with hand grenades and horseshoes... Close enough to do the job.

In 1986 the glock changed my opinion of the auto pistol. Still I think revolvers have more character and enjoy the ownership more. Still if I knew I was going to be in a gun fight tommorow I would carry the glock no question.

I started out with revolvers in the early '80's thinking they were simpler. Auto's seemed so complicated. I also wanted to shoot magnum rounds because they were so much more powerful than what was available in autos. Remember, the "Dirty Harry" movies were just a few years earlier in the '70's.

I never was really concerned with the reliability issue with autos. I bought my first auto in the late '80's. Once I figured them out, I really prefer them. They are so much easier to clean.

Now, I don't care for shooting magnums and I never did care for the double action trigger pull on my revolvers. Auto's have as powerful a round as I need, I like how the slide action pushes recoil back more than muzzle flipping up, triggers are typically more to my liking, and they are still easier to clean.

Carried revolvers almost exclusively during the 80's and early 90's, but my primary carry these days is an auto. Advances in design making them more lightweight & reliable are part of the reasons why. Ammo development (40 S&W for instance) has also played a role in making the autos more desirable, reliable, and effective with hollowpoints .

Both of my autopistols are full-size so I don't carry them just because of their size/weight. I do carry a five-shot snubbie revolver. I know it will go bang every time.

However, I am thinking of getting a new 'plastic' pocket pistol, like a Ruger LC9 or a 'slim'. It would have to prove itself to me before I'd trust it with my life. I'm afraid I don't practice enough to be able to clear FTF/FTE/stovepipes, etc. in an emergency situation.

People generally believe that semi autos are completely reliable - until they see one jam. I have seen so many of them jam, not because they're semi autos, but because there are so many things that can make it happen. Murphy runs the universe.

I prefer autos for defense and revolvers for hunting, but I am not limited to those options. Reliability has never been an issue with any gun I have owned, save a Springfield XD.

I'm not any more parcial to one or the other. Generally I carry a Colt LWCommander as my city gun because it has a flat profile and is more comfortable to carry conceald. For Road trips or to thae farm It is usually a Smith 27 or 57 for possible longer shots on pigs or pests.

Cheers,

ts

I didn't even own a revolver until six years ago. I love revolvers, but almost alway carry a semiauto exclusively and alway have.

I have always trusted semi autos and carry them primarily. That said, I find my interest in revolvers growing for range, field, and hunting purposes. I even carry them occasionally. But EDC is still a modern semi auto.

Yeah, I started carrying in 1980. A Ruger Security six. I only went to semi autos about 5 years ago. Now I only carry semi's. I still love my revolvers, (bought a S&W today) and shoot them often, but I'll stick to semi's for edc.

I said auto's but to be honest about it i have never own a Revolver and until this year only had a 22LR Rifle and a little 25 auto. This year i have been busy at the gun store and my main one the owner tells me to look in the case and get the one that i want to look at. :D

Born in '56, first shot my dad's WWII 1911 at about age eight. Been an aspiring 1911 guy ever since. Although I spent a few years in other camps, I've always come back.

I own, shoot, enjoy, trust and carry both semis and revolvers. But about 75% of the time it's a 1911...because that is what I shoot best.
