Ok so I know this is last minute but I have heard different things and have gotten different responses even from the DELTA hotline. I want to know if I can check my handgun and rifle in the same case or if I have to have seperate cases for them... just wondering because going home for the holidays and would like to be able to still use my CHL while I am back in minnesota.

Check deltas website and print out and bring with you their rules. Do the same for applicable TSA rules. I'm sure someone will come along and give a more useful response.

Gun talk had a show on this topic a few months ago that was informative. I plan on shipping my guns next day air the day i fly when I move west early next year. I refuse to check baggage.

The site is vague... I am not sure if that means separate or not

Pistols

You can bring pistols and accessories as checked baggage as long as they are included in one pistol case and contain:

Pistol telescopes
Noise suppressers
A small pistol tool case
No more than 11 lbs. (5 kg) of ammunition

Rifles and Shotguns

Delta will accept firearms and shooting equipment packaged as follows:

One gun case containing rifles or shotguns, plus shooting materials, and tools
One gun case containing handguns, one scope, and tools
One bow and quiver of arrows and maintenance kit enclosed in a case or container of sufficient strength to protect the bow and quiver from accidental damage

An excess baggage fee will apply if checking more than one gun case. Ammunition is limited to 11 lbs. (5 kg).

Same case is fine, though be careful. Delta seriously damaged my case en route to Las Vegas a few months ago and refused to compensate for the damages. The case appeared as if someone had tried to access the contents without unlocking it.

I will never fly Delta again.

that is the case I am using everyone says it is good to go just making sure have locks on all the parts it is supposed to
That's the same one I've got. I had all the locks on. When I got it back (they put it on the wrong plane on my flight to vegas) the handle and two of the locking clips were missing. The case was brand new when I checked the bag, when I got it back it looked like someone had been at it with a screwdriver or something. Really like someone tried to get in. Everything inside was intact and unmolested however, so the case did its job. I ended up canceling the return ticket and flew back via American Airlines.

I can't speak for delta, but southwest doesn't care, I just checked a bag with 4 handguns, 6 magazines, and 2 boxes of ammo in it (all in a pelican case within the bag) about an hour ago. TSA definitely didn't care, though it did alarm, so they had me unlock it, and ran a swab over the edges of the case before opening it, and then on the surface inside. All in front of me, and then locked it in front of me and let me inspect it. Guy even tried to get the books in the bag in a nice order for me too...
