... what handgun would you want, if you were only able to chose one?

Assume that you can't have any other firearm (like a long gun) to accompany it.

By ground zero I mean all the worlds governments are destroyed, there is no electricity, all the grocery stores have been raided and shelves are empty, you don't know where to get clean drinking water, money is meaningless, you need to feed yourself and perhaps your family, and you're pretty sure your neighbors will be willing to kill you for that last bag of beef jerky in your pocket.

Given everything you know, what single handgun would you want?

I'm thinking something along these lines would be useful to put food on the table and keep the neighbors neighborly: Ruger Redhawk, .44 Magnum.

9mm anything. Or maybe a 22.

If the stores are empty, I am going to be dependant on what I can find/appropriate and these two are what you will find the most of.

Primitive

. . . there is no electricity . . .

Hope you have a large hoard of powder and primers to go with your reloading gear.

You know, suddenly I'm thinking a big bore airgun wouldn't be a bad idea.

I mean, yeah, I have a nice S&W 586-7 that will eat a wide range of loads, but that assumes that ammo is available.

Without electricity manufacturing -- especially the kind of precision manufacturing needed for powder, primers, and ammunition components generally -- is going to be a problem. However it shouldn't be too hard to round up plain old lead, and a good old fashioned bullet mold and mini smelter would at least make it possible to feed the gun if powder was not an issue.

On the other hand, there's the older and cruder black powder. Are there smokeless powders that can be sufficiently made without electricity? And primers?

So, if I get to have an endless supply of manufactured ammo -- or at least good reloads -- I'll take the S&W, thanks.

Failing that, I'll either have to research black powder pistols or go with a big bore air pistol.

Hmmm . . . on the other hand, I might be able to see myself having a .22 LR pistol (like a Ruger MkII) and a crate of ammo. It's actually plausibly feasible to have a lifetime supply of .22 LR ammo tucked away in a closet when the electricity dies. I could do that. Except maybe I'd go with a Single Six. I dunno. Lemme think on that.

I'm split between a nice .357 revolver for a hunting focus and a Glock 17 for defense. Though in reality I would probably take the G17 and go about solving the problem of not having a rifle in the first place
