somewhat a odd combination on a revolver. But I'm thinking about having a python barrel fitted to my Ruger Security Six. The barrel I'm going to use is blued, and my Ruger is stainless.

Of course to have it uniform, I'd had to have it refinished. Wondering if some people could offer what options there are? Being they are two different grades of steel, I would have to think there would be two different processes to refinishing it. Would it be easier to do it while the barrel is unmounted? Or mounted and after the underlug is machined? I'm sure Nickel is and option. But can you blue SS? And could it produce the same color as regular blued steel?

Put a metal plating or a black coating over the entire gun, after the barrel is fitted. The smith may wish to remove the bluing from the barrel before starting the work, but there is no sense in plating/coating the barrel before doing the rethreading and other machine work.

I am a bit curious if the smith also plans to install a spring and detent in the barrel for the front ejector rod lockup.

Good catch. I didn't' even think about that. I'm sure the machine shop could mill that out and fit one in there. Its all about $$$$$. I do know the Ruger has one, as it secures at the front of the ejector rod, and the rear of the cylinder. But on the Colts, I think it latches as the rear only.....

We did talk about it and "yes" he is planning on putting a detent on the crane in front of the cylinder "room providing".

So back to my original topic. What finish options are there for a blued/stainless gun?

Nickel ?
Chrome ?

Would it be a single plating process or would there have to be different methods used? What about clear anodizing?, that would make things a lot cheaper. But I have no idea who well that would hold up

Certainly hard chrome, electroplate or electroless nickel would match the color overall. As would one of the paint type coatings.

Anodizing is an aluminum finish, not used on steel.

I'm sorry, I typed that wrong. I meant powder coating or ceracoating in clear coat. I now this is applied to automotive like wheels and such. Not sure how it would hold up to firearms.

What I'm trying to do now is trade my stainless Ruger for a blued Ruger. I figure it could cost me a little less if I just went with a high polished blue.
