I used to think the Colt SAA or quality replica, full blue, engraved and stocked in ivory. Closest I can come at present are these USFA.
I have since changed my mind and think that one could do no better than a properly done 1860 cartridge conversion. This one a 2nd or 3rd generation Colt done in the Richards Type I style by Bob Millington, engraved, nickel plated and ivory stocked. Not my gun.
Keeping with DA I'm torn in that I wish Rugers and Dan Wessons were built with old Colt and S&W fit and finish. That is to say that I find the architecture of the Ruger and DW's to be more pleasing than the Colt and S&W but the old Colt/S&W seams, finish, hardware etc... are much finer.
Definitely the Colt SAA. It's the one I fell in love with as a kid 50 years ago, the one that stirred my interest in revolvers to start with and it still turns my eye everytime I see one.
I like the Colt SAA a lot, but I kinda think the 1960 Army is right up there with it for good looks. I own neither, but will own a couple of replicas sometime or another. I do own some nice looking single actions and cap and ball revolvers, though, IMHO. Nothing too wrong with the 5.5" '58 Remmy which is my newest. It kinda took the sting away from my want for a SAA clone. I might get a cartridge conversion for it, sans ejector, though. I'm thinkin' .45 ACP rather than colt.
There are others that come to mind just for their 'classical' looks (e.g., S&W Schofield, S&W K-38), and others for their 'cool factor' (Tranter, Mateba).
