I am looking into getting into coyote hunting, I have a few areas where people have heard them, yet when I go scout I am not seeing tracks/scat. Anyone have any spots they would be willing to share in Central Maine? If not, any tips on scouting locations? Most info I can find seems to relate to wide open spaces out west.

Heavily wooded area I am assuming. It can actually be quite difficult to hunt song dogs in the deep woods. In Pa, I would try to set up on any clearings or clear cuts or power line cuts. An electronic call with a remote as well as a remote controlled decoy. Set it up about 20 yards from the edge of the woodline. Set yourself upwind about 50 or so yards from the call and decoy with your back up against some brush or a tree. Keep your eyes open as they will just suddenly "appear". Your eyes are the only way to hunt them. With deer, a lot of times, you will hear them coming. With yotes, you wont.

talk to farmers. Most in my area know when they come out.

I hered one here in Levant. but havent called it in or seen anything. Here in Maine I guess they are a lil harder to get.

on the lighter side, where ther is deer there is coyote.

There are plenty of coyotes down in winterport/Monroe/dixmont area where I am. I can here them many nights, but, I have yet to ever see any tracks that I could associate with them. My understanding is in thick woods there could be 10 of the buggers watching/listening to you just outside of our sight/ear range.

Only way to know for sure is find a good setup facing INTO the wind and start calling.

My brother tells me that he has lots of them in the Winslow area. He thinks they tend to be in places where you find turkeys, more so then deer. That is just his opinion. He calls them in just before dark and then again just before sun up. Also he has seen a good number of them down around Dresden.

i work in gorham and they have taken out 4 turkeys around the shop i'm in, in the last couple months.

The first time i had ever seen one in Maine was back in the mid 70's. Up around Unity Plantation. They where not even called Coyotes at the time. COY-DOGS according to Fish & Game.

wow this threads helpful. i live in centeral maine (next to winslow actually). and am planning my first try at it. should i use my 357. or my ak-47? i assume both have solid enough power for it. just seeing if the range would be close enough to try a wheelgun
