I have found a S&W model 64 stainless w/4in barrel for sale from a private owner. Hes asking $400 for it. Is this a good price or should I look elsewhere. thanks

You didn't mention whether it was an older pre-lock version or a late model, or the condition, but...

$400 is a fair price for a pre-lock heavy or pencil barrel 64 in NRA Very Good to Excellent shape.

Here's an example:

There are many worn former police/security trade-ins floating about that might command $250 to $300 because of finish issues (scratches, scuffs, and dings to stainless finish or grips).

So...condition is everything. If it's in nice shape, offer him $300 and meet somewhere in the middle. If it's a scratched up former working gun, start around $265.

I just recieved an email from the seller. It is a pre lock and he descibed it as in excellent condition.

You can find police trades for <$300. That being said, my favorite trigger of any gun I've owned.

It's a great revolver, but it's a buyer's market because literally millions of K-frame 4" .38 duty guns were made by S&W.

The only 64s with current collectible value are rare variations or NIB with all original accessories. Those could run you $500-$700.

~$300 is the center of the used price range. Whether you pay $350 for a revolver with a nice finish...or $250 for a cosmetically challenged but functional .38...you still win.

You can't go wrong with a 64 (assuming it's in good mechanical shape).
