Best scope type or sights for 100 yards?

When I started having problems with irons, I found 1x4 to work well for me. About as good as a red dot for close work with the 4 power available for farther shots...

What are you shooting at?

For larger targets nothing is faster than a 1x optic like a Aimpoint at 100 yards. For precision, you want some mag, but magnification costs field of view.

I have a couple of red dots, a 1-4x, and a 3-9x. All will work well within 100 yards. Of the three, I like the 1-4x the best for it's size and weight. I think it also depends upon the type of rifle and what you intend to use it for.

2x7 rifle or shotgun scopes are sweet. i put a tasco 2.5 power scope on my 870 and its perfect for shotgun range with the smooth slug barrel(less accurate range than rifled barrels). im currently scoping out either tasco or nikon 2x7 scopes for the new saiga 5.45. 4 power is sufficient, but better glass will still maintain sufficient brightness at 7x . the 2x also will be clear at 15 feet away while the 4x will not. best of both worlds for 15 feet to 150-200 yards with my 40 year old eyes. ymmv

For 100 yards, I've been really happy with my Weaver Classic 1-3x20 on my .35 Rem 336 Marlin. It's the only lever I have a scope on. The rest are factory irons or Williams peeps with a .050 twilight aperture and fiber-optic front (and the Williams peeps work way better at 100 yards than logic suggests that they should with my 53 year-old bifocal bespeckeled eyes).

i only used optics for a long time, but for a good while now have been having a lot of fun with irons.

really good ones though, garand and factory a2 sights.

Pretty much any sights will do the job at 100 Yards. For rapidly acquiring a target, it's probably just just me, but I think that open sights are the best at that sort of distance.

Open sights are fast but unity power sights are even faster.

And they work in the dark.

Not all shooting happens on sunny days at the range.

ya, night shooting is all the rage lately, but i still enjoy my irons.

if your peepers aint what they used to be i would just try an inexpensive 3x9 variable and see how you like it.

Try out a 2.5-10power scope or even 3-12power. I think if your punching both paper and hunting your really cannot beat that kind of power range. At 2.5x or 3x you should have a good field of view when in the woods top end is nice for target shooting.

I've had to wear glasses for a few decades now. When the eyes started to go I thought my irons days were over. They are at dusk and dawn. Still sort of OK for daytime range work. I do like 1x Red Dots as they are fast and full field of view. I also like 2x Red Dots with smaller dot (2MOA or there abouts) for reaching out to 100 yds. 2x is really quite a bit of help.

For rifles that I will take to the scrub and chaparral, 3x9 is it for sure. Nikon is right up there. With a BDC retical you can easily reach out to 200 without concern, and 300 is not out of reach if you have something to steady on. Pulse and breath will throw me off at 300, even with a tight sling.

If hunting cold/rainy days or high probability of fog, I reach for one of the rifles with a Bushnell Elite. RainGuard lens coatings do help.

The one thing about optics of any kind is to keep them clean or you will be staring at dust and mud. Covers are good unless you know it will be a very fast shot? Then you carry in hand just try to watch the dirt best you can.

A 2-7x32mm sized scope offers a good deal of versatility. At 2x you have plenty of FOV for up close shots or moving targets, and at 7x you can really dial in an off-hand shot at 125 yards.

I still use my redfield sight at 200 yds on my 22's. I have bad sight for reading so anything close up is no good without reading glasses. I had my optimotrist give me a prescription for reading and one for shooting long distance. I have two sets of glasses as I do not like bi-focals. I use the glasses that allow me to see long distance clear, and this fixed my peep sight problem.

A small objective, low power, quality scope mounted low for cheek weld and at proper eye relief distance is always faster and more accurate for me than open sights.I'm talking 1X-2.5X at the most and 20mm to 36mm at the most.

I would look into a Leupold VX3 1.5-5X20mm or VX3 1.75-6X32mm or the new VX2 2-7X33mm as my first choices.Some european optice might have slightly better glass but the Leupolds lighter weight and larger eye box are better suited for me.

A fixed power 4x scope with a larger objective (40 mm) and generous eye relief--if you can find one now (they were quite common 20 years ago, but like hen's teeth now).

No point in a 40mm objective on a 4x scope. 20-32mm is more than enough.

What can you possibly gain on a 4X scope with an objective larger than 32mm?The human eye can't take advantage of a larger exit pupil anyway.

^^^And very few people can even take advantage of an 8mm exit pupil.

I would think the larger objective would allow more light to enter the scope; something that's important when shooting in lower light conditions. This is quite useful, even at 4x.

The human eye can only open up to somewhere between 5-7mm depeding on the person. A 4X32 scope will let in 8mm of light. More than the eye can use and is a waste. A 40mm scope set at 4X will let in 10mm of light. Yes it is more, but since the human eye cannot use anymore than 5-7mm it is wasted. A 40mm scope set on 8X will let in 5mm. That is about all the average eye can use and is ideal. The only time a 40mm scope will let in less light than the human eye can use is when set at powers greater than 8X.

Nothing wrong with the fixed 4X idea. My suggestion is the Weaver K4.

I run fixed four scopes on everything unless its a target rifle and then i run much bigger (and heavier) glass.
