I wanted to post a quick thread to let everyone know about a site we're launching for firearm enthusiasts of the Southwestern US, SouthwestFirearms.com. After having great success with NorthwestFirearms.com and with myself considering a move to Arizona for a while, I wanted to create the same sort of community for the Southwest. I know there are already many different forums for the four states and that region in general, I simply want to offer another option. Those of you on NWFA know it's not like most forums on the net. Hope you enjoy!

Stay Safe,
Joe Link

Cal Guns flicked me for life. Three times under two different names in fact. Though it's pretty funny now in retrospect given that I'm an active member on at least a dozen 4x4 forums, five or six gun forums, another half dozen sailing forums and a few other oddball ones. Seems they love the 2nd but didn't quite appreciate my sarcasticating version of the 1st......:D

Heh I wanted to keep it within 'some sort' of geographic boundary, I figured NM was a little closer to the central part of the SW :)

All are welcome though!

I'm curious. What is it that you don't like about CalGuns?
The whole GPal fiasco and how management handled it, along with the antics of some of the mods (if you're familiar with the site, think of a bird name). Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate what they've contributed to the 2A cause in California and I got a lot of good information there. It's more a matter of disinterest than disgust. Mostly.

[QUOTEI thought New Mexico was part of the southwest. Nothing new, lots of people don't realize it is even part of the US. ][/QUOTE]

It is?

You don't need a passport to visit there?;)

Evidiently not. You can come here from any country in the world, legally or not, and get a driver's license. Just walk into any DVM office and apply. Try being born in the state, leaving for a few years and then getting a license. :cuss:

For what it's worth - I'll pass given the California connection as it has sooo many of it's own weird restrictions.

I've lived there (California), manufactured here (Arizona) and sold firearms in all the states mentioned and voluntarily pulled the plug on all dealings, firearms related as far as California goes due to the laws there and the level of consequences for even an honest mistake.

So, again, for what it's worth I figured I'd give the reason why I'll not be joining.

Good luck with your site in any case.

I also have to agree with a couple of posters in that NM absolutely should be included and from my point of view anyhow, instead of California.

I think New Mexico is more Southwest than California, given the state of the gun culture there. As an expatriate native Kaliforian and now permanent
resident of New Mexico, I feel I have every right to complain that we are not included on your site. :what:

Calguns has some good stuff about what is going on but the "2 more weeks" stuff that goes on for years got real old for me.

That, and the mostly far left liberal thought mixed in with the 2A stuff made me realize that CA is probably a lost cause without a lot of re-education. I don't know how you can claim the 2A as a right while thinking there is nothing really wrong with wealth redistribution, as long as government does it and I get my cut.

But, maybe that is just me.

Last I knew, Arizona, New Mexico and a lot of Texas were the Southwest. Colorado is a Rocky Mountain state, Utah and Nevada are Great Basin states and California is a Pacific Coast state. Arizona has more in common with New Mexico and West Texas than the arbitrarily geographical disparity of the SW forum.

A lot of the old west lifestyle and culture continues where I live, heck, we have more in common with Montana than California. :)

That’s what turned me off of Calguns too, plus the substantial arrogance of a couple of the heavy hitters there. I only use it for the classifieds now.

Deciding on the geographic region the site would encompass was one of the most difficult decisions I had to make. The Northwest was simple by comparison. My original goal was to focus on Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. I wasn't planning on excluding California, but I wasn't going to do anything to promote it as a place for California gun owners either. After reading your feedback it sounds like my original plan was the correct one, so I believe I will revert to that. Any other feedback you guys have for me would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately Joe, I think the diluting factor of most topics eventually being reduced to what Californian's can and can not have/do would be overpowering.

The sheer weight of numbers of the California population alone would no doubt lead to it being a California forum with neighbors participating from time to time.

Some of this I base on the experience here and on a couple of other firearms sites but I also belonged to a couple of regional motorcycle and auto sites which are dominated by California related conversations in their ever more invasive areas of things like long term storage, highway regulations, pollution control, paint.... It goes on and on and eventually one grows tired of filtering through the non-relavant California issues and just ceases to log in.

We at SWF are slowly but surely gaining momentum, so to all from the SW area and elsewhere, check it out, register and start posting.
