My Girlfriend certainly loves shooting!

We forgot Eye protection that day so please don't bury me alive! :uhoh:

The 1942 Sturmgewehr put the gas operating system above the firing bore, and so they needed to put a huge triangular front sight on it. Kalashnikov copied that as well, and it has evolved into the AK-47 which for him stood for Automat Kalasnikov. This huge front sight blade gives you a lot of parallax, and so when the rifle is not held perfectly straight up and down you will be off target with your shots significantly at several hundred yards, like 300 or more.

I prefer the M-14 and the Ruger mini-14 which both put the gas system below the bore, and therefore your triangulation and parallax go away with the iron sights, on the 14's.

The AK-47 and the M-14 are both heavy .308 weapons as well.

The 5.56's are much lighter. And the modern 5.56's are adjustable in their stocks. But the 5.56's have the same kind of front sight blade and parallax issues.

But the one feature that you cannot beat in the AK is dropping it in mud and then firing it right away. I suppose that is its main selling point, besides being very inexpensive as well.

Your sweetie looks like a really good shot too.

Shoobee, parallax is only an issue with magnified optics. I think what you are talking about is offset (the sights being some distance above the bore).

All rifles have at least some degree of offset, since the sights have to be located at least somewhat above the bore. But of course some have it less than others. The main situation in which you have to take it into consideration is shooting at ranges shorter than the "near zero" of your rifle, which will result in point of impact being below point of aim (the maximum being at the muzzle, where POI is under POA by the actual amount of your offset).

It's not really a big deal, and is not a factor that really makes one rifle more effective than another.

Also, the AK-47 and M-14 are not both .308 caliber weapons, and their weight is not anywhere close to the same. An AK also weighs about the same as a comparable 5.56mm rifle.

Don't worry, we were all noobs once too! ;)

And good job to the OP and all you other gents for getting the ladies out to shoot.

My wormin enjoys it somewhat, but not nearly as much as I do. She comes out to the range occasionally, and I got her to come to an Appleseed with me once (I am an instructor). She is pretty good from prone with a sling. And she is good enough with her .38 special to defend herself if I'm not there to protect her. She is grudgingly tolerant of my gun-buying proclivities. I'm sure that might change if I ever put a ring on her finger though!

Parallax is offset as well, scientifically speaking.

Maybe used more as a term for scope optics, sure.

The thing I like about the Ruger 10/22 is the close proximity of the iron sights to the bore. This is especially useful for rabbits or squirrels.

I can't imagine trying to hit a rabbit or squirrel with a big triangular "offset" front sight blade. Of course, if you did hit one, it would blow up from the impact force, and the pieces would fly in different directions, and get full of dirt. That's the parallax/offset issue.

I have had one woman ask me to teach her how to shoot her .380 which her dad gave her. Since she specifically asked, and she seemed like a very bright stable person, I taught her. Like everything else, she learned it and did it well.

Another time, a not so stable woman asked me, and I turned her down. She went on to find the local indoor range and got an instructor to teach her instead. Washed my hands of that one.

Good job! But, next time give her a loaded gun. They make more noise that way:evil:

My girl does alright, if you ask me..... ;)

The Russians were doing that for years before the STG44 was conceived. It wasn't even the first assault rifle. The AK 47 wasn't based off of the STG44 as they aren't mechanically similar inside, they only share outward appearances.

The first Assault rifle for everyone to see, the Fedorov Avtomat.

Also, look at the front sight of the SVT-40, the gas block is above the barrel and the sight stands higher. It's not quite like the AK 47 but you can see the Russian's did it first.

Trying to figure out where the discussion of paralax and AK's came into this thread about gf's and guns...?

Mine came to the relationship with a .357 snub, asked me about guns first, and grew up in a household headed by an avid gun collector.

Still working on getting her to shoot my AK though. Figure she ought to do it as she has fired more powerful deer rifles and shotguns. Just kinda psyching herself out right now. Her brother is buying an AK right now so that should help.

OP: Your GF needs a mag in that gun. :scrutiny:

Jokes aside, well done, sir. My GF didn't like guns when we started dating, eventually got her to at least shoot some, then I got her one for Valentine's Day and somehow that was a great idea.

Top it off, for our first wedding anniversary she had the brilliant idea of spending the day at the range... yes, you read that right. HER idea. I did not contest.

There is something universally fulfilling about shooting. Most newbies I've introduced are immediately surprised by how much thrill they experience. I have had the pleasure of shooting with my wife for about 3 months now. It started off fun, now she can outshoot me on rimfires. Trips to the range are getting downright competitive.
