I am going to be stationed in California for a couple years. I am not a California resident and do not have any carry permits or any other ties to CA. As such, I was wondering what I need to do, if anything in order to take some of my guns to CA with me. I don't care about concealed carrying them or anything like that.

I just want to take some of my guns (rifles, pistols, and shotguns) with me so that I can go shooting. How do I have to transport them? Is there some type of registration? What else do I need to know so that I do not run into any legal issues or have explaining to do if I am stopped with guns in my car? Thanks.

No magazines over 10 rounds, no "assault weapons" (can look up exactly what that entails on CalGuns forum), no 50cal or anything covered by NFA. There may be exceptions for servicemen being stationed here but I'm not aware of them. We also have to register all handguns with the DOJ, I believe there is a requirement for new arrivels to register within a certain timeframe. Again, there may be exceptions but I'm not aware of them.

Just saw some stuff I missed.

Ccw is permited but expencive, concealed carry only. Transport longguns unloaded, and handguns must be unloaded AND in a locked container, usually the trunk.

Pretty good list, just one correction. .50cal is just fine, .50BMG is specifically banned but others are not (.500 S&W, .50 AE, .50 Beowulf, .50 DCT, etc.)

I was told that air pellet guns that shoot anything over 600 fps are also banned in California.
Told by whom?

Okay -- the OP has links to two excellent sources for the information he wants. So I'm going to close this before we start getting the usual misinformation and uninformed comments.
