When I was a youngster our chief of police always wore a white shirt, gold badge and carried a 38. Snubnose. Probably like most of us I went to the polymer framed high capacity auto loaders a while back. A few years ago laid off I took the course in our state to be a licensed armed security gaurd. I work at a bank daily and have carried a full duty belt with either my 45, 9mm or 40. Recently a purchased a Taurus 85s and I am loving it so light wieght and of course at the bank the longest shot woult be about 15 feet. I also love the Taurus I purchased because of the price but after shooting it a ton I have just grown to love it.

Welcome back to wheelguns!

My first handgun was a High Standard Double Nine, and now my favorite is our SP 101 5 shot .357.

Actually, my summer carry is a Ruger LCP with light clothing and the .357 with heavier clothing.

Taurus can be hit or miss on fit, but sounds like you got a good one. If it works, hang onto it.

I had a Taurus .38 snubbie that my wife carried. Then, I bought a Ruger LCR in .38. FIRST time she saw it, she declared it HERS. Sigh. SO, I sold the Taurus. I regretted it cause it was a good shooter and quite handy to carry.

I have since replaced it with a S&W 337 Ti in .38. Guess I can't do without a .38 snubbie either, although I LOVE the 1911's and .45's in general.

SO-I feel your 'pain' as it were.

I'm an armed security professional, and I carry a four-inch S&W Model 686-6 as my primary with a S&W Model 37 in my pocket as back up. I like my Model 37, but I wouldn't dream of carrying it as my primary.

With what ammo is the 686 loaded? Just curious; in Florida, armed guards can carry .357 Magnum revolvers, but not Magnum ammunition. It must be in .38 Special.

I love a snub on the hip. IMO its the best way to carry a snub, both speed and comfort wise....

When I was a kid, the S&W Chief's Special was the snub-nosed gun that all my toy guns were based on. My toy gun came with a badge and a holster. I also had a small Marx gun that was a snubbie. And then Maxwell Smart and all the detectives of the era used the Chief's Special. The best views was when Agent 86 would get the draw on someone and then have a dialog, usually followed by a fight or him reholstering his gun. Also, the first stainless gun was the Model 60 and it was one that no one could obtain unless they knew someone. The first ones had some problems and stainless hammers and triggers didn't mesh too well. The stainless was soft in some guns, as well. Finally the company decided to hard chrome the hammers and triggers and then the complaints stopped.

I remember back in the 80s the gun was still impossible to get in stainless and next to impossible to get in the blued version.

My first snubbie was a Charter Arms .38 Spl.
Not such a great choice.
My 2nd was a S&W Model 10-5, it was a bit heavy.
My 3rd was a S&W Model 36, I was worried about the hammer & pocket carry.
My current one is a S&W Model 38.
It's in my right front pocket all the time. - in a Blackhawk Pocket Holster NOT in the leather holster.

Recently upgraded my model 36 .38 Special to a model 60 .357 to go with my 4" model 66 . Range sessions have been very fun.

I just ordered a 2.5" barrel for my Dan Wesson 15-2. It's a sweet shooter with the 6" barrel, but a bit long for carrying around. My main CCW pistol is an XD45, which rides just fine, but I do like the Dan, and want to give it some holster time.

Right now it's loaded with Remington 125 grain SJHP .357 Magnum ammunition. Next time I qualify, my carry ammunition will change to the 125 grain Golden Saber .357 Magnum. The only revolver calibers approved by CLEET are .38 Special and .357 Magnum. Semiautomatics must be in 9mm, .40, or .45. We qualify semiannually, and, so far, none of the bottom feeder shooters have out shot me.

And a Model 12 is lighter still. However, the Model 686 is what my agency issued, and I don't have a problem with it's weight, especially when shooting .357 Magnum loads.

I'm looking at a new Model 638 to replace my Model 37 as my duty back up. Less chance of snagging in the pocket.

I traded for this one at the gun show this weekend. My wife and I shot it today. She really needs to quit showing me up. :)

I dig snubs something fierce. Best pocket gun around and most versatile IMO.

I'd love an Alaskan, but until I've finished school and have some real income again... it'll have to wait.

What's funny is that all the police officers I run into want to see my badass revolver. They are issued Glock 22's (detectives carry Glock 23's or 27's), and the Sheriff's Office issues Glock 21's and 30's.

One of my first snubbies was a Charter Arms Undercover. I think I paid something like $88 (plus tax), for it many years ago. Had some problems with it and sold it, replacing it with a used S&W Model 36. Since then it has been pretty much S&W J frame snubbies ever since.

As Confederate posted earlier, back then a Model 60 (or my dream snubbie, a Model 40), was a rare find and was always priced way beyond my meager salary at the time. But I could usually find a used Model 36 for a decent enough price, or even pay a little less for a 3" model as it seemed everyone else overlooked them in favor of the shorter snubbie versions.

Eventually I got into the shrouded hammer models, like the Model 38 and 49, and now have a Model 649 and 638 as my favorite revolvers for CCW.
