I have a 44 russian that is in good shape and mechanically sound. All serial numbers match except one grip. The serial number is very low 1927. It also has the reissue date on it. Any info would be great. I may also write SW to get letter for it.

I think you have a Model 3 Japanese that was converted from the Model 3 Frontier. The Frontier was made in .44-40 to compete with the Colt SAA but when they didn't sell, many were converted to .44 Russian and sold to Japan, which already used S&W revolvers in that caliber. Your serial number is on the list of conversions published in Smith & Wesson - 1857-1945 by Neal and Jinks. There would also be a standard Model 3 with the same number but yours looks like it has the hook extractor.

To double check, look at the front of the hinge area and see if the center part has what looks like gear teeth or if it is smooth. If it is smooth, you definitely have the converted Frontier model. Just to double check, the cylinder should measure 1 9/16" long.

Before discussing value, I need much better pictures to judge condition. Dark blurry pics may do to identify a gun, but they won't do when trying to assess a value.

It has what looks to be a tooth on that center section, but its only one. The clylinder is also 1 9/16 as you said. I will put better pictures on here then. Thanks for the info.
