Just today I received a holster I ordered from them. I ordered a Sourdough Pancake for a 45 Long Colt Uberti Cattleman with a 4 3/4 inch barrel. I've double checked my order just now. I had pretty high expectations after reading so many positive things on their website and in this forum. Frankly it is the least impressive leather holster I've ever gotten.

Positives
1. Decent finish.
2. The cross draw slot is perfectly placed for me.
3. The gun rides high in the normal slot like it should. Slot placement is perfect.

Negatives
1. The holster is too long! With the gun shoved (and I do mean shoved) in as far as it can go their is still 1.5 inches of holster remaining. I thought these were made to order?
2. The holster is too stiff. I expected a stiff holster since it is designed to retain the gun without any straps (a design I prefer) but this is nothing short of ridiculous.

All the leather holsters I've had over the decades have been for various 1911's, Taurus revolvers, and Glocks. I've never run into one that was so excessively oversized in length while being so excessively tight. I'm wondering if this is normal with this maker and if I should even waste my time returning it. Money isn't an issue. I want a holster that works the way it should. On a totally positive note the cartridge slide I ordered is perfect.

1.5" does seem like a bit much. However, I can tell you from experience that the Simply Rugged holsters do soften up a bit over time, so don't worry too much about the stiffness. Remember, these are supposed to be rugged ;)

Also, as the holster loosens up and softens a bit over time the gun can start to sit a bit lower in the holster. My GP-100 used to have 1/2" or so of holster past the barrel. Now the barrel pokes out almost 1/2" if it's firmly seated.

I think it would be best for you to contact the manufacturer to see if they can work out something with you prior to turning to the high road. I always give businesses a chance to make me happy before I go public. In most cases, they will resolve any issues.

For the record, I have a sourdough pancake that is almost perfect in every regard.

You should've contacted Rob and gave him a chance to make it right before posting a thread on THR about it.

I've been buying leather holsters for years and have never had an issue like this. This is past the normal break in that some require.

Why didn't I contact the maker? I'm just trying to find out if this is the norm with this maker, if anyone else here has had issues like this, and thus if it is a waste of my time to even return it vs. simply just throwing it in my stuff that doesn't work that good pile.

Funny but I see people post about products they are unhappy with constantly without getting asked why they didn't contact the maker first.

No, it's not right, & that sucks to get it that way, as much is it sucks for me to have let it go out wrong. But, I'll take care of it. I Send me an e-m ail, I'll send a return label and get it right back out to you.

^^^There you go. Rob has been an absolutely stand-up guy for decades (I first met him in the late 80s/early 90s). He'll make it right if you give him a chance.

Contact him

I have met Rob. He is a stand-up guy. He will make it right if you give him the chance.

There is a Biblical admonition (sorry, don't have the citation) that instructs us on how to redress an offense.

1) Take it to the offender

2) if step one doesn't work, take it to the community

3) if all else fails, take it to the courts

In non-religious terms, you always give a man (or a business) a chance to correct their mistakes.

How would you feel if you ever made a mistake and an injured or offended party bad-mouthed you before letting you fix it?

The problem could be as simple as you having received the wrong holster because of an addressing label glued to the wrong box and there is another customer out there who is wondering why his holster is too short.

Rob's post makes me want to purchase from him.
I can understand posting when you're unhappy.
I'm sure, as you pointed out, others have as well with other products.
Another biblical quote "forgive and forget"
I'm sure all will be fixed.
Rob has a great reputation and his post and offer show that.
PLEASE, you've every right to post unhappiness, and that should be followed up
with the results of the correction! Fair is fair. Credit where it is due.
We look forward to hearing about the fix.
Salute sir.

Let us know how it goes if you contact them, I was looking into ordering from them awhile back until I saw some really belligerent stuff on FB from whoever does their page there.

Kinda left me not sure what to expect customer service wise.

I'll chime in and say that not only was the Simply Rugged holster for my Bulldog Pug a little long, it also fit my 3" sp101 perfectly....because I sent in a special request for it to fit both. No extra charge for that special request. The week after I ordered the holster, I asked for some IWB loops be put on if it was possible, not to worry if it was too late. No answer, I figured it was too late. The next week, the holster arrived with IWB belt loops, a $15 option...that I wasn't charged for. They were stiff though, took a bit to wear in :)
Simply Rugged is tops in my book; He may have made a mistake, but those happen, and to have the owner show up on the forum and ask you personally for the chance to make it right....that don't happen with every manufacturer, gun-related or not.

Sounds like a simple mistake - which unfortunately does happen. Glad I ordered from Mr. Leahy in the past and I would again without hesitation, given how he's handling this.

I have two of his holsters and they were a little stiff at first but now are fine and have good retention, i will be a return customer.

I've never owned a Simply Rugged Holster but I came real close to buying one recently and will probably pick one up in the future. Had I bought one and found myself in the OP's shoes I would have first contacted the business but maybe for different reasons than the OP. First off, money IS issue for me, if I spend over $50 on something and wait weeks to receive it, I'm going to try and get my money's worth. Secondly, I'd want to get the ball rolling on whatever needs to done to get me a working holster.

In the OP's case, I can see how coming to the forums first made sense to him. All my leather holsters are different and each one went through some significant changes before they finally settled. One of my more recent purchases was similar to yours; tight, squeaky and stiff, certainly more than I'm used to. I thought about coming here first (I went out of town right after getting it) but didn't think anyone would be familiar with the holster. Since I ended up going out of town right after getting the holster and couldn't take my gun, I just wore it around with no gun. By the end of the trip my holster had broken in nicely just from the belt stretching and movement. When I got home, I contacted the maker to let him know how pleased I was with the holster.

Had I decided to come to the forums first, I would have not bashed the maker in anyway. I don't think there was anything wrong with the OP coming here first to ask questions about the holster and others experiences with it. However, the angry tone and conclusions drawn by the OP pretty much made it a review of the product. Without having the second side of the story and no attempt at a resolution, it's not a fair review.

Impressive response. I'll shoot you an email in a bit about it. Just so you know I got my second holster from you in the mail today. This one was supposed to fit an Uberti Old West Defense revolver(far right photo). It is too loose and will literally come out if I turn the holster upside down without even having to shake it. LOL! Hey no one is perfect. It does fit my Ruger New Vaquero 45acp perfect (holster and gun center) so I'm keeping it as it is one less holster I need now. The original holster I posted about (Uberti Cattleman far left) I have tried the bag trick wrapping in a very thick freezer bag. It will go in and out better just still too hard and still too long.

I appreciate your response though and the fact that you are even willing to come here and offer to make it right. I'm sure you would have done the same and will via email now. I'll be sure to post when all this gets resolved.

Those are very nice looking holsters... and I am impressed by the response. No recriminations, no whining, just an apology and immediate action to make it right. Next time I need carry leather, I'll be looking for Simply Rugged. (I'm assuming they come in brown :D )

Mine, for a Ruger SP 101 has been perfect. I'm sure it will work out right for you, too.

Maybe I'm way off base here, but I've never really expected real inverted retention from my Simply Rugged holster when it's not on a belt on my hip. Much of its retention ability comes from being belted on. I could do all the cartwheels and handstands I please with my gun holstered and it would never come out. But the gun comes out of the holster very easily when it's not on my body, and I couldn't care less.

All in all I have yet to find a holster that's as concealable and comfortable. It can make a 5" GP100 disappear--comfortably!
Every shop has a few items go out the door that aren't perfect. It's how they deal with these that really matters.

I own three Simply Rugged holsters and have been very pleased with them.

I'm glad to see this thread though, . . . . I had meant to order another one and this reminded me to do so.

I have four Simply Rugged Holsters, and love em' I got a Sour Dough for my S&W M10 but found my slim build don't take to the sevice size holster to well. Next was a Silver Dollar, due to its smaller size it works great. My last two are the now dicontinued Range Master holsters. One each for my S&W M10 and the other for my Ruger BH.

The Range Masters are great for woods carry, to bad they been dicontinued I think a lot of folks would like them.
