I saw a recent episode where Red Jacket installed a G3 rear sight on the receiver cover. It piqued my interest so much that I bought a G3 rear sight and want to go about getting this thing mounted on my Romy. My question is what's the best way to attach the sight to the rather thin stamped sheet metal without distorting it out of whack?

Brazing? Welded? Rivets?

If these were commercially available and the price was reasonable, would you buy one?

Dust cover mounting isn't exactly great for holding zero. I wouldn't buy a commercial one unless it solved that problem.

If you really want to mount it, try to find a way that doesn't involve lots of heat. Riveting might be okay if you can figure out a way to rivet the sight on.

Mounting a G3 rear sight to the dust cover is one of the more common things Red Jacket does on their AK builds. I've seen a couple of their rifles with this setup and while it does look interesting, like TurtlePhish I wouldn't trust it to hold zero. The dust cover isn't exactly the most rigid of mounting places, and I'd be afraid that the zero would wander from shot to shot.

The only way to know for sure is try it out myself and see.. I just cannot decide on how to properly attach the sight to the stamped sheetmetal receiver cover. Too much heat will be bad for a variety of reasons; rivets may or may not stay in place after repeated use; welding/brazing might cause too much heat.

How does Red Jacket do it??

ya gotta admit it looks good though!

They weld them on, honestly it doesn't matter how hot you get a dust cover, because all it does is block dust, it is not a wear critical part. If it were a bolt, firing pin, or especially an extractor heat would be very bad, but those dust covers are made of a pretty soft unhardened mild steel anyway. If it was me I would weld the front sight to the gas block (which you have to do to use the HK rear) and use the parabellum armament AK rear sight dust cover pic rail thing and attach a HK rear meant for 1913 pic rail which you can buy at rtgparts website. Good luck BTW I wouldn't mention that you watch red jackets insanity they are the joke of the gun community but not as much as American guns lol. You instantly lose a man point or a cool point whichever lol

Are the HK sights steel? You'll just have to tig weld it. The hardest part will be getting it centered. And you will of course have to remove the finish first around the weld spots.
