Small issue bugging the back of my brain: I once read somewhere that the Argentine gauchos used to favor small, double-barreled smootbore pistols. IIRC, they took modern cased ammo, so it's not a black powder issue.

I just can't recall what the pistols were called. I'm also rather mystified as to their purpose. Were they just that much cheaper than cartridge revolvers? Did Argentine gauchos only need two rounds out on the pampas?

Just one of those odd firearms trivia items I can't quite grasp. Thanks for any tips, -MV

I had one when I was a boy (40years ago) and it took .410 2 1/2" ammo and .45 Long colt. Had hammers and under lever release but I cant remember manufacturer other than marked 'hecho en Argentina' or something similar. I knew this was an illeagal gun back then:evil: and got rid of it in late teens for a Stevens Favorite in .32S&W , which I still have!I used to go caving with it in the Old South and it was great on cave bats!(we were ignorant in those days!)

Hi this is not the pistol you speak of but it will shoot .45 long Colt or 410 shotgun shells and hit a paper plate at 50 feet with 410 slugs or 45 lc.They shoot like a 357 sig cal, not that bad, I have shot the 410 3 inch shells (felt like my 12 ga,) haven tryed the 2 1/2 shells they might be ok.This is going to be a handy car or home by the bedside gun.

Yep,l those Cobray SxS long-derringers seem the closest thing that we have in the U.S. these days.

I am still curious about the Argentine ones these days. There's a name for the pistols, on the tip of my tongue, but I just can't quite grasp it.

I'm still curious why the pistols would be smoothbored. IIRC, they were in cartridges like .38 Long Colt and such, so firing shot wouldn't have been an issue. Were they smoothbore just to save the trouble of rifling a short-range weapon?

It'll keep bugging me until I find out what those dang things are called...

Where can you buy that gun in 22/22mag's picture? It looks like it would be a blast. What is the name of the gun?

Kukri: the gun appears to be a Cobray derringer. Not sure if they have a web presence, but they always run ads in Shotgun News.

They sell a variety of such derringers. The most interesting variant is a double-barreled .410 with 18" barrels and a folding stock. Not sure on the quality. They tend to be very, very affordable.

MatthewVanitas,

Is it the "Garrucha"? I seem to recall this was a SxS, external hammered double-bbl that came in .22RF (and .320RF, although these were understandably less popular in the USA). They used to be advertised (pre-GCA 68) in the gun mags. Walter F. Craig Distributors, maybe??

Ahhh, the good ol' days!;)

I know a place that has one for sale (I think new) and they also have another one with a little longer barrell as a shotgun with a skeleton stock. Texas only or ffl they run about(approx) 150each. Call Action Pawn 254-547-5900 talk to Paul. Seen them there yesterday.

The dubble barrel shotgun pistol is a 11 inch Leinad that my dealer got from SOG .I removed the under the barrel plastic part and were the part screwed in I can screw a forward handel if I want to fire 3 inch shells.I have found that 2 1/2 shot shell and .45 lc or 410 slugs are not that bad to shot but I would need a forward handle with the 3 inch shells. What surprized me was the how accrate the slugs were out at 50 feet middle of paper plate. All in all after some little changes and shooting 50-60 rounds its a lot of fun.

Yep thats what I had as a kid "They used to be advertised (pre-GCA 68) in the gun mags. Walter F. Craig Distributors, maybe??"Mine was .410 2 1/2" and it had a gaudy crude engraved nickle finish! I sold it before I was 17 , thats more than 40 years ago!:)
