I like to keep a couple of loaded magazines for a rifle and a pistol in the safe. Maybe a loaded revolver on the top shelf.

Anybody else?

An unloaded gun is just an expensive club. :) Also, if all guns are always loaded (Jeff Cooper's Rule 1), you will be more careful with them and actually promote safety, as well as never having to wonder whether you loaded them or not.

If you keep guns for defense in a safe (for child safety reasons or whatever), the safe needs some sort of quick access, perhaps fingerprint recognition or at least a numbered keypad. The sound of glass breaking or a door being kicked in is no time to be twiddling a dial. :uhoh:

Yep. But I sure don't count on "knowing" which one is loaded. I treat them all the same; as if they are loaded. But there's a loaded M4(gery) there with a couple extra mags. And the nightstand pistol goes into the safe every morning.

Yes, of course. But I always treat EVERY gun as if it is loaded when I first pick it up...chamber check first.

"ALWAYS, ALWAYS REMEMBER"!!!:)

Yes I keep loaded guns in the safe.
Typically only the ones I have designated for home/ carry self-defense purposes.

ALL of my handguns are loaded and chambered, with no manual safety. All of my long guns are "cruiser ready" (i.e. loaded, not chambered, safety off).

Even though I know it's loaded, I still chamber check to make sure. Don't want to draw when I need it and hear CLICK!

If you have an autoloader, definitely keeping loaded spares is a good idea. Autoloaders are incredibly slower to reload than a gun with an internal magazine (i.e. a revolver cylinder) if you have to fill the magazines first.

Where's that image of the guy with about 500 loaded mags in his safe, captioned "preparedness: it has been achieved".

Sometimes I do have a loaded gun in my primary safe, and there are always loaded magazines in it. But anyone who keeps loaded guns under lock must keep this in mind: a loaded gun in a locked safe--no matter how ingenious and efficient the locking system--is simply not as readily accessible as a loaded gun in a nightstand drawer, against a door frame, or, even better, on one's hip.

I have a system in my house for reminding me where every loaded gun is at any given time. That doesn't mean I don't reverify that a gun is unloaded before I fiddle with it--I do. But it does give me an easily recognizable indicator (to me, not to anyone else) of where the loaded ones actually are.

I have a couple loaded. They are marked LOADED with black magic marker on a yellow sticky note.

I never keep loaded guns in the primary safe, although there are some loaded magazines. I would never try to access that safe if I needed a gun in a hurry anyway, so why keep them loaded. It just doesnt make a lot of sense to me. Plus, we keep other important documents in that safe that my wife could need access too. With two little kiddos following her around everywhere, it could create a dnagerous situation with her opening the safe and my one year old down by her feet.

Now the day safes are a different story. A loaded handgun is the only thing in those safes ever. And the only reason I would open them would be to get to the gun. Unless I am taking them to the range, I will probably be in a hurry and dont want to have to worry about much else. It actually happened to me for the first time in several years about a month ago when someone rang my doorbell at 2:30am.

I do not keep them loaded in the safe but I do keep most of them in a padded case with a loaded magazine ready to go. The guns I have in the house for protection, each have a post-it note indicating they are loaded in case I suddenly depart this earth, and someone is cleaning drawers and comes across one.

Cool pic Walkalong :)... I get tired of people telling me cats are useless, this is obvious proof they are not!

In safe and loaded is not for me. When my guns are in the safe, they are unloaded and cased. The one I have on is always loaded and chambered.

Handguns are stored loaded with one in the pipe in a safe and one spare mag each. Rifles/shotgun are stored with full mags/tubes, nothing in chamber.

I don't think its a bad idea, but for me personally I am very selective about which guns stay loaded.

Typically I have 1 gun in my glovebox that stays loaded (in an IWB holster - occasionally I'll carry it). My Ruger LCP ("main" carry gun for all occasions) stays loaded. I have another that sits atop a bookshelf in my bedroom that is my "go to" gun in the event of a break-in or other need. Everything else generally stays unloaded.

Always (try) one step closer

...

Yes, I leave one 9mm, either my Sig P225 w/147gr JHP's or my SA EMP 9mm 1911, depending on rotation/cleaning/handgun down time and, like mentioned, any "loaded gun" also sits in a marked hostler with visible Red dot/s as a reminder, as well.

It's as it should be, "pre-planned/game-plan" IF that is where I am at a moment of the SHTF..

OMMV,

There was an episode of Hill Street Blues years ago where a bad guy was forcing someone to open a safe at gunpoint. The victm had stashed a loaded pistol in the safe and managed to shoot the bad guy. After seeing that I am convinced that this is the way to go. After you turn the last number you could distract the bad guy by telling him that the door sticks and you need him to hand you that screwdriver over there , When he looks away BAM.
