I don't load .40 S&W but would use HS-6 for 9mm & .40 S&W if that was all I had.

I would use Win231 before anything else.

I dont load .40 but would agree with this. I like N320 just as much but if I had to pick one powder for 9mm to use going forward it would be HP38/W231 based on availability and performance (and because it rocks in .380, .38/.357 and .45)

As far as I've noticed, Ramshot's 9mm loads for Silhouette is the same as the old Winchester Action Pistol loads.

I don't know which Winchester Data pamphlet you're looking at, but I can tell you that the one I have is definitely different. Ramshot's 9mm load data is bullet and OACL specific whereas Winchester load data for 9mm only list the MAX OACL 1.169" for 9mm loads.

Anyone really interested in high performance 9mm loads can simply jump over to the Brian Enos forum and check for yourself what powders are being used to load 9mm Major. Those loads are about as high performance as it gets.

I have personal experience in working up loads that are considerably higher than published loads with Silhouette and the Remington 124 gr. JHP and an OACL of 1.142" with no signs of excessive pressure. ;)

You are correct on that, the old Winchester load data did not give specific OAL data for any calibers or powder, one of it's shortcomings. But what I saw was the grain loads were the same, or within 0.1 gr.

kinda surprised not much input on aa#7, thanks for all the info maybe i should look closer at
hs6 and universal they both seem popular the more info all the better

In my loading for 40 S&W for my Springfield EMP I found that AA #7 gave more blast and recoil than other powders. I use AA# 5 or Win 231 (HP-238) in 40 now.
